Vienna Airport ✈️ Flughafen Wien Schwechat

Boring airport with poor amenities. Everything was closing up by the time I got there, which wasn't so very late — as you can see from the video, well before sundown. Had to make do with a mediocre few cans of beer and a couple of those miniature bottles of brandy, procured from a newsagents-sweetshop, along with an insipid sandwich which gave me indigestion and some disgusting potato chips loaded with salt and fat. I had been looking forward to some delicious little pastries and excellent draught beer along with decent local schnapps, but there was no chance of anything like that at such a late hour (7pm). No doubt the Viennese are all tucked up in bed with a mug of hot chocolate by 8.30pm at the latest. Went into the one restaurant that deigned to remain open and it was pretty grubby, but I thought I might risk it; waited there fifteen minutes at a greasy table and received no service or attention whatsoever, so I walked out. Ambled over to another place and the waiter blanked me; I was another supplicant, who did I think I was; I would have to beg for Wiener Würstchen with sauerkraut and mustard but I declined to get on my knees. The man appeared to be closing up as well; really, I was ashamed of myself for potentially putting him to a great deal of inconvenience, it was presumptuous of me. However did these people keep their empire going for so long? I mean, you wonder about the victualling of their army. Still, things must've been much, much better in, say, 1913, and I wish that I could return to that era before the Great Slaughter and then the rise of Nazism, with Austrians being of course among the most enthusiastic supporters of the house-painter. Vienna Airport is so unsatisfactory that it succeeds in reconciling you to Heathrow, would you believe. Come back LHR, all is forgiven.
