RIP, Bobby.
Really, truly one of the greats.
Bobby was my tutor on Jazz Centre Society courses in '82 and '83 at
Morley College. Pub lunch together EVERY day, both years - just the 2 of
us. Some private lessons later. Last saw him at the 606, November 2014.
He took the place apart in his own mellow way. Pins could be heard
dropping through the air during a long, heart stopping ballad. Had a
lovely long, long chat with him and his wife that night. "Still playing
the Cigar Cutter, Neil?". He remembered...
A lovely man and a beautiful player. World class, all the way. My heart is bible-black tonight.

I had the pleasure and honour of playing a gig with Bobby Wellins and Jimmy Deuchar many years ago when a local arts festival were lucky enough to persuade these two gentlemen to come and play in the North east of Scotland. we had an amateur Bebop band on the go, but were somewhat concerned that our level of musicianship may not come up to standard. as keyboard player I was extremely nervous, but both Bobby and Jimmy were extremely gracious, and at one point Bobby turned to me and gave me words of encouragement ( I was only about 27 or thereabouts at the time ), he was calming, positive and encouraging> I don't know what happened, but therafter I was able to fall back into the 'zone' and play without the nerves that he must have sensed. Incredible musician, sadly missed.

What a guy!!This guy's is so underrated. How sad to see the low views! My new favourite jazz saxophonist!!❤❤
He's inspired me to learn the saxophone, something I've been thinking about for years. Beautiful!!❤❤
I have subscribed !!❤❤

What a wonderful piece of music. I saw Bobby many times, sometimes with Stan Tracey. Totally wonderful sound and a unique way of stretching a tune so you never really knew what direction it might go. Lovely bloke too. RIP Bobby.

This is so beautiful. I remember Bobby mostly with Stan Tracey and apart from the unique "Under Milk Wood" saw the quartet many times and they were always inspired. Bobby was the perfect foil for Stan Tracey.

Beautiful. Saw Bobby only once playing a piece inspired by Culloden Moor (was early 80s I think). Would like to have heard him more - a superb musician
