HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW (1807-1882)*
Born Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in Portland, Maine, USA. His father was a wealthy lawyer and U.S. Representative for Maine that was descended from 'Mayflower pilgrims'. Attended a local 'dame school', Portland Academy and Bowdoin College (a college that his grandfather helped to found). After graduating he travelled extensively in Europe before taking up professorships at Bowdoin and Harvard (1835). Married Mary Storer Potter in 1831 but was widowed in 1835. Married Frances Appleton in 1843, she died tragically in 1861. Achieved huge commercial success as a poet - sold one poem for $3000 in 1874. Died in 1882 in Massachusetts, USA.
