I went from spending ~ $1500/year on make up and skin care 2015-2020 to spending ~$100/year. If even 10-15% of consumers are like me I can totally understand why brands are going under and Ulta is struggling.

If Ulta packed better, maybe so many products wouldn't be damaged in shipping. Sending out a palette in a bubble mailer or huge box with no protection, no wonder stuff is getting damaged

Prop 65 is important BUT what I have learned as an attorney who was indirectly exposed to this nonsense - there is a private right of action to pursue Prop 65 cases. Meaning if a private citizen finds companies that don’t post Prop 65 notices they can sue. The fees are huge and that is the reason certain attorneys pursue those cases. Your description of bounty hunting is a good one. These people have no legitimate concerns over certain chemicals being used in products, they are chasing money because they can, and are disgusting. Some make incredible amounts of money on such cases.

I've watched many beauty creators show that their item(s) from Ulta arrived damaged. They bought a 5 pan eyeshadow that came in a huge box with no protective packaging (like bubble wrap). That 5 pan then gets tossed around in that box from the time it leaves Ulta until it arrives at the creators house. That seems like an Ulta Warehouse problem to me.

Ulta could fix their product damage issue by simply packing their products better. They consistently ship products not properly packed that break during shipping. This is a self-made issue for them.

I worked at Ulta and I must say it was awful the pay sucks for the amount of work. They sit there and check all the employees bags like we’re thieves before we could even leave but would let ppl walk out with hundreds of dollars of product and tell us not to do anything without batting a eye. All the employees complain bc ulta would rather support ppl stealing than care about the employees that work their butts off. The problems they’re having makes complete sense.

Oh boy. The lawsuits I've seen over Prop 65 are insane. It (almost) makes sense for things like cosmetics or other things that go on or in your body, but I've seen it used against things that no one could argue with a straight face would ever harm anyone, ever.

I had to give Ulta up, I don't have the time to go shop in store so I do my orders online and I ALWAYS have damaged goods. Some bubble wrap would seriously help them. I pack boxes regularly and air pillows aren't meant to be the only protection for makeup. That's something you fill gaps in with so your bubble wrapped products do not bounce around the box. Not properly packaging your products is just lazy. I order directly from the company because I find that usually, anything on sale at Ulta will be on sale on the company website as well. Not always but most of the time.

I am not shocked Ulta is having issues. I've ordered 3 times from Ulta in the last year and 2 of the 3 were just in large envelopes and my products were CRUSHED!!

That is so sad about Suva. The owner seems like such a genuinely nice woman. I wish her the best in life!

The problem I have with Ulta is the prices. If a company doesnt have standard prices in their contract, Ulta just raises the product prices for retail. Why would I go buy my affordable makeup there, when walmart's or even the brand's websites prices are *dollars* less per each individual item? Ulta was known for having affordable options, but it's like buying them at a grocery store. They are way too high.

Hey Jen, I wanted to point out another indie brand change I saw recently called Copacetic Cosmetics (tbh I don't know a dang thing about them, prolly hit follow after randomly seeing a pretty or funny reel or something). But they recently made a post addressing shipping issues over the last several months, and they need to restructure but asked for feedback what people would like to see (everything made to order, small limited batches of stock available, etc). Figured it was worth including!

Imagine if Ulta just put a couple pieces of bubble wrap in their boxes to prevent all that damaged makeup!

OMG Jen, You are so right. I have contact dermatitis allergies. Just because I’m allergic doesn’t mean they are bad for others.

Can you even IMAGINE what $400k is to any brand but what it means to an INDIE brand?!? Forma/Morphe could not have been more selfish.

On the synthetic thing - one example I’ve used is melatonin. “Natural” melatonin, taken from an animal pituitary gland, can come with a (low but present) risk of contamination with viruses associated with any animal tissue that sticks around.
Synthetic melatonin is literally the exact same molecule- but minus exposure to dead animal tissue risks.

I’m not commenting on the safety of melatonin in general or all the nuances. But just an example of “natural” versus “synthetic”.

Cal resident here, Prop 65 is ridiculous. It’s everywhere as you said it’s on mundane items, and we are desensitized to it. It’s one of those good ideas, that was too broad, and now no one takes notice to.

I love jd glow, I was so frustrated for them, but I’m glad to see that they have so many dedicated customers who want to continue supporting them no matter the brand name. As of yesterday, they responded our comments on their facebook saying that they’re transitioning pretty smoothly ❤ I (my skin) needs them to stay around!!

A lawyer practicing in Louisiana is not able to practice in other states unless they take the test and bar to practice in other states. Louisiana doesn't have the same law as any other state. They are under a different system. Louisiana uses Neapolanic law.

I got so many damaged products from ulta in 2023. They really need to package their products better for shipping, knowing that they go through basically an epic perilous journey.
