Exactly! Your kid feels terrible, needs to be home in bed and likely isn't learning much if they're sitting in class sick. They're spreading whatever they have to the rest of the class, and the teacher (who are all going to then spread it to their own families) and now everyone is sick. Keep them home.

Because too many schools punish absences even when kids are sick. Complain about the system, not the people

Our schools allows for 2 unexcused absences and 5 parent notes. Everything else requires a dr.'s note and that visit requires a copay. As a school bus driver I feel your pain. I have sent kids into schools with clear bags of their up-chuck so that the schools will send them home with an excused absence. When I just clean it up and tell the school they got sick, they put them right back on the bus that afternoon. Please have this conversation with your admin. No, I'm not allowed to take them back home after they get sick on the bus.

There are an amazing number of parents out there who haven't made the connection between their sick kid and other sick kids. smh.

As a criminal defense attorney, kids are going to school sick when it's something treatable at home, and parents can't afford a doctor for a basic cold. If they don't, then I see the kid on family court for truancy and the parent in a separate case for charges on too many unexcused absences from illness. Charges vary depending on the mood of whoever brings the charges. Basically, send them sick or risk jail. Go to school sick or risk juvenile detention. I would go sick too. I hate this, but if you weigh the options, what would you do?

Yes. My daughter is having an open heart surgery soon, she has a rare condition with her heart and lungs. Last year we were chronically in the hospital just from kids being sent to school sick around her. We’re doing home bound right now, to avoid her getting sick for months at a time.

The economy is hot garbage. A lot of families can’t make ends meet, and missing work isn’t an option.

Schools punish absences and employers don't give parents time off

My 4th graders passed the flu around like a football for almost a month, then we had a tropical storm come through, everyone was at home for 5 days, and when we got back nobody was sick anymore. Almost like staying home and resting actually works!

It's most likely because both parents work and they can't take time off. Or on the worse end, they can't afford to take time off. Both my parents are teachers and this was commonly the answer. However, I think if the kid is over the age of 12, that kid can stay at home sick alone.

Because I called the attendance line and nurse at the school to discuss the symptoms and they said “We’d love to have [student] at school today”. RSV symptoms during a spike of RSV cases. Yup.

Because when I keep him home every time he's sick, the district labels him chronically absent and threatens to contact the police. True story. Why do schools still do this? BTW, I'm a teacher and work at his school and still get these stinking letters.

I had a student who was sent to school with a 103 fever. We sent him home. The next day, he was sent BACK to school having been given Tylenol at the beginning of the day. He spiked another high fever at lunch and was sent home with a stern note from the nurse to keep him home for the next 72 hours. Three days later, all his friends and the students he sat next to in class (because we're a Kagan school) began missing school... with strep throat!

This child was sent to school with strep throat and 103 fever. There is NO excuse for that.

Not only did his friends and the students who sat closest to him get strep, but so did I! There's a sub shortage. For four days, they had to split my class among my two teammates. We each had nearly 34 kids in our rooms, so for four days, my teammates had to teach 45 students (their own plus half of mine minus the seven students who were out sick with strep) until I was well enough to come back to work.

Then why do schools say you can't miss more than 5 days of school the entire year...even with a doctor's note? And if you miss more than 10 days you might have to repeat your grade. My daughter has been out sick 4 days (all spread out) already and it's not even Christmas yet.

Facing this dilemma today but the school has the audacity to send us a letter saying they have missed 10 days already and if they miss 7 days more they won't graduate -_- I am all for them staying home but not when the school sends threatening letters. Enjoy the germs then :eye roll:

My kids recently got sick from being around other kids who went to school sick 😫 I kept mine home when they got sick recently. Was it inconvenient, absolutely but that's part of parenting and life

As someone with the immune system of the dead snail, I am so sorry you have to go through this.
I haven't left the house in 2 weeks, but my bf has colleagues who've stopped wearing masks and come in to work sick.
I have been bed ridden for the past 3 days :)

I work at a school and I can tell you that the schools don't care. They keep calling the parents who keep their sick kids home. I had to call a parent, not my job, because I was the only Spanish speaking person working that day. Mom was mad, said we didn't believe her and we kept on calling etc. I'm with you I want the sick kids to stay home. I ended up getting the flu the week before winter break. It was bad and I was upset those sick kids were at school. They could have at least work masks but they didn't. At this point I can't really blame the parents. I blame the school.

Maybe because when ur kids miss more than like 5 days the teachers start sending letters and questioning why are they sick as if you have some sort of control over it
