It is not Best Practice. This should be only used in emergency situations. RDP should be used ALWAYS over a VPN connection. The explanation is, because every scanner for security holes scans on the standard ports and every attacker has enough time trying to enter the service. AND NEVER EVER OPEN SMB for the internet.

DO NOT forward 3389 to your PC openly as suggested here. While it will function, there are scores of hackers looking for exposed remote desktop connections. Their bots will hammer it until they eventually crack it and take control of your machine. If your router/firewall allows you to restrict the remote access rule so it ONLY works from a specific remote IP address (i.e. the public IP address of a friend's house, your office, etc.), that would be OK.
