Do I Have to Prime Before Using Chalk Paint | How to Stop Wood Bleeding Through Paint | Stop Stains

Today I'm sharing why I almost always prime before I paint furniture, even with chalk style or any paint that has excellent adhesion.
It's not to help the paint stick, but it's to prevent bleed through from staining the paint!
So I did a little experiment to share what bleed through is, and what we can do to stop it from messing with our painted furniture.

Thank you for this tip. What might be elementary to some people is a reminder we can always learn a new technique. Bleed thru is a pain in the neck.

Thank you for doing this side by side comparison!!!

I’ve spoken directly to Rustoleum before about the “stain blocking” claim of their 123 and they straight up told me that it will not block wood tannins or nicotine and referred me to BIN.

Thank you so much for doing this video! I appreciate the time you took to section off the top of the furniture and show us how each experiment turned out!

Oh I am so relieved...I need to prime the inside of my kitchen door but I am so sensitive to fumes and I live with a pet, so I did not want to use shellac. I will use the 123 instead. Thank you so much. Subscribed! Love the style of your videos.

I'm aware this comment isn't related to the video, just seeking advice. I have two screws that are rusted and I can't get off dresser drawer, have you ran into this problem and what did you use to get them off?

Such an informative video, thanks for experimenting and taking us along! Do you have a recommendation for a flat or satin topcoat that won’t yellow a white chalk paint? I want to paint my dining chairs in a white chalk paint (they are a light yellow wood color currently) and I don’t want to wax since they will be in heavy use (I have 2 boys, a dog and a husband) so I can’t wait a full cure time for wax. I’d like to use a topcoat, but almost all the reviews I read on every topcoat says it yellowed their white paint. Or maybe this is because they didn’t use a shellac to block first? Any suggestions are appreciated!

If you need to start over after I've put on the wax how do you remove the wax without sanding?

I finally switched to oil based primer and it was so much better. Be aware when you open your windows in the summer the mosquitoes will find you.
