What kind of fast grand touring cars will the future of the automobile bring us - and what will they be like?
The 751bhp Porsche Taycan Turbo S, priced at £139,000 ($187,470 in the US) which has a top speed of 162mph and can get from 0-62mph in just 2.8 seconds, gives us a taste of all-electric answers to that question.
Meanwhile the 592bhp Polestar 1 (top speed 155mph, 0-60mph in 4.2sec) suggests a plug-in hybrid take, priced at £135,500 (or $165,500 if you're in the USA).
Is either better than a V8-engined Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4dr for a long blast across continent? This 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged internally-combusted car can go from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 3.8sec and has a mega top speed of some 193mph - because, y'know, engines.
Matt Saunders and Ricky Lane headed to the idyllic roads of the Cote d'Azur to find out what the future looks like.

12:58 you can charge from 5-80% in 22min - which is far better than a full load in 40min

I'll like the polestar for its versatility... Gone are days of illegal road races just to prove a point. The idea of polestar is philosophical and I like it. You've got in it the combination of something new, exciting and different, yet versatile.

FYI: the Taycan ''engine sound' isn't synthetic in the way described. It's a real whine from the 2-speed transmission that is magnified electronically via the selection of the sport sound.

That volvo polestar is beautiful, id choose that one out of the three, what a gorgeous looking car inside and out 👌👌

Amg for me. Sometimes driving slow and hearing the v8 rumbles is more thrilling than going fast. And in tow to toe traffic having that v8 would be more fun

Splendid review. That Polestar is just gorgeous and so special. Plus the most balanced concept with 120 km+ of electric range and 800 km total range...easily my choice.

The Taycan S is amazing, but your stats about the gt63s are wrong. The car does 0-60 mph in about 3.2 seconds. Yes that four door is that fast. This car is truly special doing 0-60 faster than supercars that weigh much less.

To bad Tycan looks different from the Mission-E concept, that was magic.

only problem problem with the Porsche is no sunroof. Panamera glass is nice and all but I would definitely give that up for a sunroof!

I must be the only one that thinks the Polestar 1 looks weird. The design works on the bigger S90 and S60, but shortened it looks off.

That's pretty funny. If the Polestar costed around 20-30k, sure it could be meant for those who don't take things too seriously. I doubt it costs anywhere near that price range. Up in the 6 figure pricing, by definition, the customers are people who take things seriously, so Polestar will have a target market of about 2 people....yeah on earth.

IF the Aluminium/Air battery is a viable proposition then electric GT cars are going to be everywhere.

According to articles I've seen they have greater energy densities to Lithium Ion batteries - you're talking about a Tesla 100kWh size battery with 1, 500 mile range. They're not rechargable, but are almost fully recyclable & can be swapped in 90 seconds!

In 🇩🇪 they made hydrogen from water and solar this make it carbon free, and if the tech is developed it can be made less executive and help save the planet .
