Printing Your Photographs - Lessons Learned & Advice

In today's video, we talk about some of the lessons I learned while getting into printing my photographs and now currently my photo book as well. When I started, it was not very obvious to me what steps I needed to follow and what things I needed to keep in mind before printing my work.

I just printed some photos for my 5 year-old’s school project at Walmart, and while the quality is good enough for a school project, it really isn’t if I were to print a larger/nicer print for myself or someone else. I’m not knocking at Walmart for being cheap because it really was perfect for what I needed. I’m just saying it’s worth it to pay more when you are printing a nicer/more important piece as the colors and pixel density will be better, as well as the paper.

Agree about using the right print shop. Several years ago, I took some photos of industrial shut off valves. I wanted these for a competition and I deliberately shot them 1.5 - 2 stops down to get a dark, heavy, industrial look. Because I didn't have my own printer, I used a local camera shop. When I got the shots back, they were washed out, sepia toned "things." In the words of the camera shop, "they had CORRECTED them." Moral of the story - for anything more than happy snaps, use a professional print service.
