Just to be clear, the suica card isn't free. The card itself is about $5 refundable. At the end of your stay, you can get the $5 back upon returning the card :)

It's crazy how Japan is so advanced, and yet really is still such a cash-based society. The questionnaire tip was good too. My mom didn't have my number when coming out of the airport the first time, so she was stuck in the back for a long time, and she was only able to pass by after some other lady in the airport was kind enough to give her her number so she could escape ( ; ; )
