I think SotE was a great idea, the characters are not really "flat" as you say, they actually portray an underworld side of the SW galaxy unexplored at the time, with TCW we saw new underworld characters, and there was bound to be the Twi'lek slave dancer, while the "sexual elements" are a bit too in your face, they could be toned down for a movie, and SotE would make a far better movie than Solo or the DT. I wish they adapted Shadows to this reality, since if you analyze it thoroughly, you'll realize that the dynamic between Vader and Sidious cannot be changed by Xizor, so it's kind of dumb that Xizor wants to upstage Vader, on the other hand, the Empire could just nationalize Xizor's company with no trouble, the PT pretty much established how this works now, so SotE has to be adapted to continue being relevant. Another thing that Shadows introduces is how Luke went from frightful padawan to fully-fledged Jedi Knight. And lastly Shadows introduces a curious concept: a Human Replica Droid!!! something that hasn't been explored in SW at all, and how it could potentially break the canon.
