Something I've been thinking of before is trying to use descriptions the are more unique to my story rather than the more generic one that are overused. I think metaphors are a great way to do that!

Bitter old wizzard - crumbling old castle : this is a good dungeon the new generation of nobles abandonned
Aloof star - ' : old rock falling apart
Noble spaceship captain - ' : a land station in ruins
