Today's Catholic Mass Readings & Gospel Reflection - Wednesday, July 17, 2024
Reading 1: Is 10:5-7, 13b-16
Resp: Ps 94:5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 14-15
Gospel: Matthew 11:25-27
Wednesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 391
Reading 1: Is 10:5-7, 13b-16
Thus says the LORD: Woe to Assyria! He is the rod and the staff of my fury, and my indignation is in their hands. I will send him to a deceitful nation, and I will order him against the people of my fury, so that he may take away the plunder, and tear apart the prey, and place it to be trampled like the mud of the streets. But he will not consider it to be so, and his heart will not suppose it to be this way. Instead, his heart will be set to crush and to exterminate more than a few nations.
For he has said: “I have acted with the strength of my own hand, and I have understood with my own wisdom, and I have removed the limits of the people, and I have plundered their leaders, and, like one with power, I have pulled down those residing on high. And my hand has reached to the strength of the people, as to a nest. And, just as the eggs which have been left behind are gathered, so have I gathered the entire earth. And there was no one who moved a wing, or opened a mouth, or uttered a snarl.”
Should the axe glorify itself over him who wields it? Or can the saw exalt itself over him who pulls it? How can a rod lift itself up against him who wields it, or a staff exalt itself, though it is only wood? Because of this, the sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts, will send leanness among his fat ones. And under the influence of his glory, a burning ardor will rage, like a consuming fire.
Responsorial Psalm: Ps 94:5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 14-15
R. (14a) The Lord will not abandon his people.
Your people, O Lord, they have brought low, and they have afflicted your inheritance. They have slain the widow and the stranger, and they have murdered the fatherless.
R. The Lord will not abandon his people
And they have said, "The Lord shall not see; neither shall the God of Jacob understand." Understand, you senseless among the people, and you fools, be wise at last.
R. The Lord will not abandon his people
He who planted the ear, shall he not hear? Or he who formed the eye, does he not consider? He who chastises nations, shall he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge?
R. The Lord will not abandon his people
For the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his own inheritance. Until justice is turned into judgment, and all the upright in heart follow it.
R. The Lord will not abandon his people
Alleluia: Mt 11:25
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: Matthew 11:25-27
At that time, Jesus responded and said: “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned, and have revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was pleasing in your sight. All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
