Nightmare loved Dream as a little brother. He doted the young boy with the other gods. At some point, he decided to leave the security of XD's empire to gain more experience in order to grow his God powers. Of course, he had to leave Dream behind and although he missed him, Nightmare knew he had to grow stronger if he wanted to protect what he loved. What he didn't expect was that he and Lucid began a quarreling that led to them fighting. Their fight chopped down entire forests and moved seas, until Dream intercepted and stopped Lucid from killing Nightmare. According to XD, "Lucid used his pure God power in that final attack, if it wasn't because our energy was backing Dream, he would've lost his life. Dream can physically recuperate, but he will never be able to truly develop his God core and fully achieve his full potential". After Dream was healed, he made Nightmare promise him he wouldn't ever fight his 'brothers' ever again, which Nightmare agreed to. But he broke his promise.

Or: Nightmare thinks about his past as he prepares to (possibly) destroy his beloved little brother's creation.

AU: Where Dream dies in prision, and is a God that created the DreamSMP.

Another note: Just wanted to clarify that I am not shipping Nightmare with Dream. They are not blood-related, but still Dream's like Nightmare's little sibling.
