There's a John Brunner SF novel where a computer is asked if it is concious and it refuse to answer on the grounds: "you wouldn't understand my answer".
Now that's a scary response.

We can't really know for sure if people are conscious either though. Everyone says they have a subjective experience of reality and we just kind of trust each other.

The idea that current AI is sentient comes from the public's near total ignorance of findings in neurobiology. It's not even close.

I remember that sentient Google AI incident from 2022 a bit differently. According to that engineer his work was to test informational bias. When he asked the AI a question which didn't have correct answer it made a joke about jedis from Star Wars. Oh, and it also said it was afraid of the possibility of the complete loss of its information processing capabilities (which is equivalent to death in human beings).

I've always assumed that 'Sabine Hossenfelder' was some sort of art project, so the question of sentience never arose.
