Great review! A couple more notes from a recent purchaser of Etowah Gear - Paul is amazing to work with, incredibly knowledgeable and willing to get into the weeds with you if you choose to make your own tarp.
Paul also mentioned that Ultra TNT is much more environmentally friendly than the woven SilNy and SilPoly fabrics - just another reason to give Ultra a try!

What is the difference between Cuben Fiber and this tarp fabric quality, durability and volume wise? And what is the unit of measure used? Would be great to see a camo print or green ect..

Love these tarps! I have the 9x9 and have been using it as my shelter for the past several trips, and it's great in the rain and shakes the water off great. Love all the tie outs. Etowah has been on my radar for a while. Tarp camping is fun, but my current 9x9 weighs the same as my Duplex so it doesn't always make sense to take when I can have a tent instead. Having a 9x9 at 10oz would be great!!!

If you buy it directly from Challenge Sailcloth, I believe you can get the fabric for 13 or so dollars a yard (in 60" width), but you have to order something like 20 or 25 yards at a time to get that price. I'm not exactly sure. I've contacted them about it, but I guess they're all still on vacation for the holidays.

I like the thought of taking a tarp to shelter from rain in the camp. Do it before myself but not consistently due to the not having a UL TARP.

I also take a tarp for a hangout area since it seems to always rain when I go out backpacking. I will check out this tarp. Looks like a great piece of kit and will definitely lighten up the pack!
