Ueno is definitely a great written character to the point that everyone hates her. In the manga her character is more developed than the movie and we get to see her POV. She was a bitch of a character but she definitely played a huge role in helping the MC to try to open up with people by inviting him to hang out.

I see many people in the comments saying that they hate her cuz she was a bully to shouko
I personally thought she was a rather complex person who did anything she could just to make her crush like her back
At first, we saw that she helped shouko because she was deaf, she helped her out in reading and also wrote her notes for her
In the manga, when she slightly teased shouko once, shoya gave a positive feedback to her about it
‘He likes it….’
After that, she started being mean to shouko only to receive attention from shoya since she liked him
Inshort, she did all of it for love
I believe that if she wasn’t so fixated on gaining shoya's interest and attention, she was capable to be a good character.
What she did was silly and disappointing but changing yourself for your love interest is way more common than it seems and the silent voice took a realistic take on that 👍

Edit: ya’ll chill 💀 I’m just explaining her character and my opinion on it, I’m not defending her in any way since her reasoning doesn’t make up for the fact that she hurt a disabled person. Atleast we got a happy ending so all is well and I personally dc whether y’all hate her or not 😭😭

i just love the depth of character development this anime gave to each character. the more you look into it the deeper it gets. we can relate our true nature when we are jeleous and the bad decision we make in life

Obviously she’s a terrible person for what she did to shouko but i feel like if the movie gave more of a pov from her version of things, i think people will end up pitying her. Anyone can truly be the bad guy until you see behind closed doors

I’ve heard she’s more developed in the manga, but I actually kinda liked her towards the end of the movie. Even if it wasn’t for a good reason, she went out of her way to attempt and learn sign language. Also she definitely stayed in her room and just perfected that “idiot” sign cuz I kinda love her but ms girl holds grudges

If you hate her that means one thing, she did her job as a bully in the story pretty good. Just like in other movies, if the villain is hated because of his or her doings then the actor or the villain did his / her job as a villain. She's the reason why there are some intense scene and withouth her doings the piece wouldn't be as great as it is recognized today.

Honestly she’s just a realistic girl having her realistic problems. A lot of people are like her and even if it’s hard to bring yourself to like her, the movie itself makes it seem like she’s more of a bad character. Really, she’s just feeling complex emotions on the inside.

I honestly have mixed feelings towards her.

Yes, she hurt a disabled person, yes she did lots of horrible things and bullied her, but she only did it because she loved Shoya, and he at the time had liked bullying Shouko.

We all had that point in time where we liked someone so much that their favorite things become your favorite things, their interests become your interests, their opinions become your opinions, and you would do anything just to receive a millisecond of their attention.

Naoka was going through this stage, and I honestly think that she never grew out of it. She was actually very nice to Shouko in the beginning of the movie, helping Shouko write her notes and helping her read and such. In the manga, we got a bit of her P.O.V., which shows that she was really in love with Shoya to the point that she would bully Shouko just for him to notice her.

It's honestly kind of sad to know that Shoya chose Shouko in the end, but Naoka understood and accepted the fact that he didn't love her back. She even became friends with Shouko, and left all the haet behind her. She had a lot of character development, and that is what I love about Naoka Ueno
