Is this what it feels like to be in an evolutionary dead end?

If I’m overly pessimistic about the future of software, tell me what software you still want?

We do still need developers for as long as companies will continue their business models.

Ecom companies need to continually update their websites.
Warehouses need to continually update their software.
Suply chains need to continually update their integrations.
You want to travel more? Think of all the softwares that continually need updating. You just buying a plane ticket and flying somewhere is like 10 different softwares and 20 different integrations with other softwares. (Not even gonna touch on governmental institutions)

Maintaining and updating software is a lot harder than creating new from scratch, and that's 90% of the jobs out there. Also, 90% of the jobs are in companies you wouldn't even think existed because they're so small and specialised and even hard to understand what they do from the outside. Like a middleman between a supplier and an insurer that makes invoices and facilitates integrations. I work in one of those nowadays. We make lots of money and you wouldn't even find us if you googled the name.

If you're scared of AI, don't be. I use it daily and it's nowhere near replacing my job.

Instead of building new apps and new features, maybe software developers can focus on improving the quality of software that already exists?

Software development isn’t going anywhere. The future of tech is, a GPU and an LLM are going to be crammed into every product that it doesn’t belong in, like Bluetooth was.

The world is big man, you have to find purpose in many different things.

I always went into tech and programming knowing that it was a tool for me to do things, these things have real value. But yeah, im getting into marketing and sales and dont have much expectation to go back to software, programming is lookimg pretty bleak right now.
That's what I would recommend everybody, if you want to be a butcher/programmer/teacher that's great, but if you chose programming for the money like I did, you would be better off learning marketing and sales and ways for you to apply that to your situation.
In the real world is not quality products/services that sell, it's the best marketing that sells. Quality is a factor, but not the determining one.

The youtube algorithm sent me here, software engineer here in a big company, it s hard to find a purpose and in the end of your job you barely created anything you can touch with your hands and tell yourself « man I created this » so I decided to come back to robotics where things can be made from « scratch « and get the satisfaction of work done . For a smaller company in another country but I rather be paid less, travel and do things that have a sense than use a slide and eat mnm s like a manchild at google

USA has reached the decadence/decline stage. The only reason we organize workers is to achieve worthy ends, once the ends are simply commerce then the muse will leave. You want something worthwhile? Programmers Union, or Secret Society. I'm down with either.

Interesting man. With AI and robots I think the next ten years are going to be some of the biggest changes ever. Universal Basic Income and people do what they actually want to do. Until then CODE ON!!!

software will move away from moving pixels between screens to robots, computational chemistry and biology, smart energy etc etc. the old skills of pcb, fpga, embedded, c++, hpc, gpu etc that were forgotten with the advent of web soy devs will grow in demand.
