I spent 6 months in Dubai. You only have to scratch the surface of the place to be faced with the fact that it is propped up entirely on a base of indentured servitude that borders on slavery.
The organized crime from a half dozen different countries have a foothold there and provide all the vice you might want without directly implicating the local government.

"Cheap labour" kinda glosses over the overt slave and human trafficking that happens in Dubai.

I'm from India and the cheap labour he's talking about is brought from third world countries like mine. Those people are shown big dreams of working in Dubai and then they're taken there and they get stuck there. Those people who go there are from very poor class even if you consider the economy of the third world .

I was in Thailand a few years ago and met a guy who worked for an Aid organisation working with workers who were lured to Dubai with promises of work, then given basically no accommodation and paid so little they couldn’t leave. He said the poverty in the areas they resided was rife. The underbelly of Dubai is very much alive and kicking despite not being visible to the tourist. Frankly I hope the uber rich just find a bloody planet to go and live on and leave the rest of us alone.

That's why the upper class got rid of unions. It's the working man's version of lobbyist.

The taxes in arab countries are low for the rich cause they’re built on a system of modern slavery. Hope that explains

❗️Very rich people are drawn to authoritarian spaces because they dont suffer the downside but PROFIT FROM UPSIDE!!
Very True💚

I was looking at some apartments around the world and quite a few of them had "servants quarters" that I wouldn't let my pet stay in. We're talking *tiny* closets with no windows and barely enough room for a single bed. Utterly horrific living conditions attached to massive apartments.

I’m an Independent Latino. Dubai, sure if you are okay to live with yourself on Modern Slavery. 😢

Chris should really have Gary Stevenson on, so that he can finally get educated on how the real economy works. Tired of these podcasters crying over millionaires leaving the UK when majority of them have their companies setup outside the UK and pay next to no tax. It's the people with high paying jobs who pay most of the taxes, not the mega millionaires. It's such tired trope.

You can go to any venture capital tech conference and rich people will tell you that themselves. They tell you that in the next 100 years the productivity will increase exponentially and wages will stagnate, like they have been since 1972. That means whoever owns the assets will produce all of the value = own all of the wealth. That's not socialists saying it, it's the people who own venture capital funds saying it.

Yet you have an average Joe on the street barely making 50k/year calling you a socialist if you bring that up.

Knowing the UK is down a slippery slope and wanting to escape it, it is not the same thing as wanting to move to a place like Dubai. I’ve lived in both places, and I’d choose the UK, with all its flaws, any day. I’m an Argentine leaving in the UK right now, and although I’m looking at leaving, Dubai is the last place I’d like to go back to. UAE is a great place to spend your 20s in, party, save some money… but not a place to grow old in. Specially if you come from a western culture. If Europe, Australia, or the whole American Continent ever regain some sense of identity and return to the principles which made millions of people wanting to move to these places, no one will ever consider the Middle East as an option to start a family again… in spite of all the tall buildings and the tax free life. Having some extra money and pretending to be millionaire in Dubai while watching thousands being exploited is something only few can stomach for so long. No thank you.

What a shite mindset. Outsource and abuse low income individuals and give them false hope. Greed is ultimately what will lead to the end of humanity

This might be the most coherent explanation of the difference between classes I have heard in a while.

I visited Dubai a couple of years ago and it wasn’t my bag, very odd place. I barely saw any local people (Dubaians?) and saw many sad looking Asian workers. I like to travel on local transport when on holiday and on the metro I saw only workers, no other people just going about their daily business as in any other city. The metro was also a nightmare to use. We were staying in Atlantis on the Palm and it took us 1.5 hours and 3 changes to travel what would have taken 20 minutes in a taxi. There’s very little nature of course and the beach at the palm was ugly and there were lots of traffic jams getting on to the Palm due to its shape. Looks pretty from the air but a totally impractical shape for infra structure. If you like futuristic, artificial surroundings and no real soul in a city then Dubai is really the place for you.

Tbh, the hospitality industry in the UK isn’t super far off modern slavery - in fact, it enables some pretty gross practices in hotels in particular. I can only imagine what it must be like in Dubai

He breaks it down so simply… very accurate

Disgusting, isn't it? Big red flag in any relationship is wanting to go to Dubai.
