Lee Marven was a Marine in WW2. He fought in 21 island campaigns. Wounded on Saipan. Charles Bronson the man holding the bag in the clip, was a B-29 gunner in the Pacific. He was wounded over Japan, stayed at his gun.

War is hell. They got that part right. Great film.

When I saw this as a teenager on HBO it was eye opening. They were not there to show off. They were there to kill people.

Nobody hates war more than someone that has been in one …

This is how every director of war movies should act. War is not beautiful nor is it heroic. It is frightening at the best of times. There is no glory for soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines for excellence for those who do not make it home.

War is hell. War is cruelty. There's no sense trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.

Saw this movie in a drive in when it came out in Mobile, AL with my parents, who brought their 2 older daughters to a Monkees concert
Still one of my favorites

Thanks. Never knew that. Remember that scene quite well. I also remember my father (a vet & war historian) who approved of it.

Well, for what I see. There are only 2 war heroes in that film, Lee Marvin.
And Charles Bronson.
They actually fought

Pretty much all sides in WW2 committed some pretty horrendous war crimes, many were carried out as retribution, some were just trigger happy idiots and others were quite simply barbarous acts for the sake of barbarity.

The fact he depicted a black GI integrated into a white only unit was just glossed over.

Since Jim was the all time best rusher at the time, who else could this role go to!!!!

I never saw it that way I figured it was to keep the enemy from pursing them after all they were behind enemy lines and needed to facilitate their escape

Jim Brown...a real hero on and especially off stage.

That is one scene that has stuck in my mind since I was a ten year old child.

No matter how many try to alter the truth about world war two. The harsh reality that all countries that fought committed a lot of atrocities.

I learned from this movie.
My bunker has lateral ventilation shafts rather than vertical…
