David Hume, an opponent of philosophical rationalists, believed that human behavior is governed by passions rather than reason. He famously stated that "Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions." Hume was also a sentimentalist who argued that ethics are based on emotion or sentiment rather than abstract moral principles.
