An alarm hack I’ve made before was to take an empty soda can and drop a few coins inside it then loop some dental floss through the pull tab or around the screw top to make a hanger. Then I hang it on the door knob. If someone moves the handle you will hear it. It’s cheap and uses things you can easily find or may already have with you!

I go low tech- I put a chair up against the door.
Works. Once when I was in my room relaxing someone (without knocking or calling out "housekeeping") pushed the door and it hit the chair which stopped the intruder.
I called the front desk immediately to report the attempted intrusion.

Glad there was nothing sinister in your in-room interruption! Some good advice there - I always bring at least one door locking mechanism with me when I travel. When I get in the room, the first thing I do is turn the dead bolt and flip the latch, even if I'll just be in there for a minute. It's so automatic I don't even think about it, it is second nature (I do the same thing every time I come back into my own home too.) One tip for hotel rooms that might be full of smoke: When I stay somewhere, I leave my outdoor shoes/boots just inside the door and put on slippers, just as I do in my own home. When I take those shoes off, I quickly glance at the exit map on my hotel door and place my shoes down with the toes pointing in the direction I need to go to leave. That way, if the hallway was filled with smoke and I couldn't see, I would still know which way to go. In the same vein, I always pack a bandana, which (among other things) can be used as a makeshift fire mask, along with swim goggles in case I need to protect my eyes from noxious fumes (they take up much less space than safety goggles). And I slip a fire blanket in my personal item carry on. That may seem like overkill, and thank God I have never had to use it, but it takes up very little room and could literally save your life.

I bring two rubber door stops. One for the room door and the extra is in case there’s an adjoining room.

I saw this on TikTok today. Put you shoes by the door facing the direction of the evacuation route.

When you locate the stairs you should also count how many doors are between you and the stairs.. If the hallway is full of smoke you may not be able to see and also you should be on your hands and knees in that case.

When i was in all Indian hotel there were people who would go up to each door and try and open it. I was lucky I had my personal door lock.

I take a picture of the escape route because I get turned around easily. Great tips!

I love the rubber door stop. Also, taking a photo of the emergency exit map on one's camera phone right away is helpful in an emergency situation. Some folks aren't thinking clearly but we always seem to have our phone with us! Thanks Eunice!

I make sure, when I’m travelling alone, to remember to flick the switch to lock the door. When leaving I always check that my door is locked. There was one time in a hotel that the locked failed. Glad I always check as I was able to contact the front desk and waited until it was fixed.

The hotels I go to (thankfully) have that added lock feature that keeps the door from opening completely. I always test them out before doing anything else. Then I check the mirrors in the bathroom for those two-way ones. For rooms that have connecting doors, if the person on the other side is not part of my company, I make sure to keep my side locked and I jam the door with a chair or the luggage rack.

Cheap doorstops that don't grip on the (tiled) floor. I have a roll of non slip matting, it looks like mesh and is fully flexible., it holds plates on metal or plastic/slippery trays, stops them moving around. A square of that under the door stop may help? I carry a square with me, it's great for keeping things in place on the pull down tray in trains. It's also useful for undoing those pesky bottle lids that almost need a wrench to open. Essential if your grip is not what it used to be. E❤

I am profound deaf and had a cochlea implant. When I take off my speech processor at night, I could sleep through a blaring burglar alarm! I have the gadgets at home to make me feel safe. I am 76 and live alone.

I go away on group holidays. I am always worried about my safety in hotels. I can’t use any of the precautions that are recommended as in case of fire, they need to break my door down, as I won’t hear anything. I always make sure my tour manager is aware about this, and I also let couple of people know too. I have visited all seven continents during the last eight years, but my safety in the hotels is my biggest concern.

Always check that your window & door to balcony are locked.
I always put a piece of tissue in the peep hole. (Tip from a former hotel Mgr. )

I place a chair behind the door and a door stop under it. That way no one can use a long hanger to unlock the door handle from under the door. I know from experience how easy it is to use a long hanger to unlock the door handle. I stayed at a hotel and the battery died on the door lock. A hotel repairmen used a long hanger to unlock the hotel door handle by putting it under the door and latching on the inside door handle to unlock it. It was shockingly easy!

Wow, first people including me, were saying never stay in an Air Bnb when you had a weird incident and now you have this experience in your hotel! Good tips and good reminder to always be mindful to be safe. Thx!

I'm glad you included the rubber door stop. Someone told me about this a long time ago that worked in security, and said those hotel thefts are often crimes of opportunity. If they try the door and meet even that small amount of resistence, they don't know if there's more security in the room, but he said they will often move on quickly. Sadly, it doesn't stop crime, but it may stop it from being you.

I travel for a living and a lot of the tips you gave I use. Another tip: I place my shoes by the door and point them in the direction of the nearest staircase. That way if the alarm goes off, my shoes are right there and I know to turn left or right.
