Linux vs. OpenBSD vs. FreeBSD

This is a new format of video I'm trying. I don't really have the time or dedication to make accompanying visuals for a video this long, so it's kind of like a "podcast."

"Debian doesn't have the latest packages" The point of Debian ISN'T to have the latest versions of everything. Besides that, great points!

Thanks for the prompt to skip to 2:17 to get to the subject matter. I am new to your channel and think your growth is very cool, I also don't know enough about you yet to be able to focus on your success and like the idea of just being able to skip through that.

In my experience, the difficulty to find solutions to Linux problems does not apply to servers. I have found that finding solutions for Linux issues is amazingly simple.

Me: please, compile my Hello World :(
Virgin Rust compiler: you have to rewrite everything !! It violates the borrowing rules !!

vs

Me: Trust me bro, this float is now a pointer to a function
Chad C compiler: Yes master. _SegFault_

Debian uses older packeges, since it's more well tested and stable, so it's one of the best choices for servers. I personally don't see the reason why it's necessary to always get the latest updates even on the smallest packages. Debian doesn't get feature updates, but security ones.

The Linux kernel I would trust with my life. Every day of the year, and not even blink. It is the back bone of the biggest companies and running important and trivial infrastructure all around the planet - they rely on Linux for their operation on a daily basis.

All the other kernels are pet projects in comparison. All of them. Pets are nice, fun and important too. Dont get me wrong, we need them also or the world would be poorer

But for reliability and security. Its not even a fair comparison doing Linux to anything else. Its a fantasy game.

I forgot if you mentioned it or not, but FreeBSD actually has the ability to natively run Linux binaries if you enable support for it.

Great video veery informative

Been daily driving Linux since July 2021 I use Debian Unstable as my workstation & Arch Linux for gaming I'm happy with them & they do everything I need. But lately my inner geek has been pushing me to install FreeBSD on my workstation on a 2nd SSD drive.

Absolutely gonna do it.

Years of Linux experience kinda found itself out the window when I first tried OpenBSD. I got it installed, grabbed some terminal apps, and tried to set up i3 (which is the first tiling window manager I experienced), to no avail because I was trying to do it the Linux way. Will need to re-adjust, but I learned a lot of stuff as a result.

Absolutely. I've heard about freeBSD about 20 years ago and its still the most precious OS. I've never tried to install Linux or Unix until I became web developer, previously I was a pro gamer and 3D modeler / designer

Nice - I am running FreeBSD since version 2.1 - more than 20 years ago. It works :-) Overall I would like more *BSD systems alive and in mind of people :-)

I use FreeBSD on my backup server since FreeBSD 12.1 and I like it, but basically it provides the kind of user support in installing and maintaining the system, like Ubuntu did 10 to 15 years ago. The big advantage of FreeBSD is for me the superior support of OpenZFS. On the other hand OpenZFS on Ubuntu is also supported, but they f**ked up booting from OpenZFS. So after booting from ZFS with Ubuntu 20.04 after removing some useless snapshotting, I'm now back to ext4 for Ubuntu 22.04. However I have all my data and my ~70 VMs stored on OpenZFS, it is like running your VM from a RAM disk (L1ARC) :) :)

more people are leaving windows for freedom. I've been using linux off and on since 1998, and once tried BSD, around 2009, lately I've had my eye on it once more.

BSD hardware compatibility is horrible compared to linux distros. (especially printers, graphics cards, sound card)

19:20: FreeBSD's package manager has a more specific name: pkg_ng. For "package manager: new generation." It has been a couple years since I ran FreeBSD so I'm not sure if they still use that name anymore (if it was an interrim name to let people know they updated the package manager.) Also, if I remember correctly, it is programmed in C and has a scripting interface using Lua.

Your argumentation for why you hate rust indicates I probably shouldn’t trust you when it comes to technical moments. I’m not a fan of rust either, but you seem to hate it for all the wrong reasons, dear anime pfp person
