The thing is, I'm fairly certain wardens don't care about their environment as long as it is quiet. All you need to do was put a redstone clock on a door or bell.

A little note he probably didnt go though the nether portal after awhile of not being able to find someone or something to attack and not getting triggered by any noises he gose back into the ground (despawns) even if a player is near as long as it cant smell/hear you or hear anything else it will just go back into the ground
