Australian mining means a lot to Australia. It supports our country, provides thousands of jobs - and is filled with great people. This is Marie Bourgoin's story.

---

Marie Bourgoin grew up literally a world away from Australian mining in France.

With a father who worked for Air France she was a young woman who travelled the world extensively, but through all her travels she never made it to Australia.

Back in France Marie studied for an MBA, which included the opportunity to travel abroad. For Marie that meant the opportunity to go to one of the few places she still wanted to visit -- Australia.

So as part of her MBA, Marie spent 6 happy months in Australia studying at Curtin University in Perth. The friends she made in Australia remained close to her after she returned home to Paris in France. In fact one of those friends would one day become her fiancée.

It was these friends who helped her find a job at a consultancy firm in Perth. And it was with this firm where she had her first experience with Australian mining.

In particular she consulted for a company she had never heard of before -- Rio Tinto.

Back in France her parents were a little shocked their worldly and sophisticated daughter was working in Australian mining.

What they didn't know was that Marie was discovering that Australian mining was a lot more interesting and sophisticated than any of them could have imagined. Marie was also discovering all the opportunities in mining so when she was offered a full time position at Rio Tinto she accepted.

Today Marie is Manager at Rio Tinto's Operations Centre in Perth. The name of the centre might sound a little innocuous, but there is nothing every day about the technology she uses in the centre at all.

Although the centre is all about mining, you could be forgiven for thinking it had more to do with the space industry. The walls are lined with large screens that monitor rail, port and mine movements 1500 kilometres away or more.

In the mining industry there is no other centre anything like it anywhere in the world.

At the centre it's Maries job to schedule and maintain the efficiency of all operations from mine to sea port. Given the scale of most things in mining, the decisions Marie makes can mean millions of dollars saved in efficiency. But when things don't go to plan it is also Marie's job to devise a way to put things right.

It can be a high pressure job but she loves the technology and the challenge.

It's even a bigger surprise that a worldly, young woman from the city of Paris has also grown to love mining.
