When I'm on book tours, the question I get asked the most is "how do you write a first novel?" In this video, I tell you how I did it. Anyone can write a novel. Didn't go to college to learn literature, etc? Doesn't matter. Your idea is just as valid as anyone else's.

Ten chapters away from finishing my first book, it's probably going to be just short of 60, 000 words without editing etc. but I'm so glad I've written it because it's helped me a lot with anxiety and things. I love writing so much!

I started writing short bad stories I didn't even want to look at, then I continued on. I made my first good horror short story to my Spanish teacher. He was both disturbed and yet fascinated at the same time by my work and displayed it in the library for everyone to read. Then I stared writing my first book. First bad book, it gave me a headache. Now I'm trying to finish my first good book.

All writers write bad books first anyway, so maybe better to plan it than get disappointed with the first result - I admire your thinking.  Great advice!

Scott Sigler is my favorite author. Because of him I have written a sci fi trilogy, a novella, and am currently working on a short story anthology.

Thank you. I have always told people to just write, even if you don't know what to write, write that. ideas will come.

I found this video at the perfect time. I finished my bad book a while ago and began another book. I was floundering, trying to figure out exactly where I am in this process. I noticed my writing has improved. Your words just confirmed why. Thank you.

Best advice! I had a writing phase about a year ago where I wrote thousands of pages, became discouraged, didn't write for a while, and then came back to it. What I found was that after I let all of that writing experience soak into my psyche, it became so much more natural for me to write, and I could also pick out the mistakes I had made before... with ease. Albeit I have a long way to go, it absolutely feels more comfortable now. The only problem is that I never actually finished anything... I was too hung up on perfecting the fine details, that I never got to see how the entire story transposed. Time to buckle down on finishing this bad novel. Thanks!

I have been listening to the F. D.O.L. Sigler since his first podcast, Wearing a suit and tie the first time I have seen him was a total shock. Keep up the good work.

"I hold the small pile of nail clippings in my palm, and begin sifting through it as if I’m counting out change at a corner store. Nails are an interesting thing. They’re the little bits of us we leave behind, swept away into the garbage without a second thought. Literally a part of us one moment, forgotten and discarded the next; splinters of our past selves. I wonder how many countless clippings pile up in landfills, how many scattered remains of our bodies lie buried beneath mountains of rotting waste and Beanie Babies suffocating in black, plastic bags.

"I find a clipping that interests me and hold it up. The crescent-shaped sliver has a sickly yellow hue. A film of grime and dirt coats one side. It looks beaten up and weathered. The edge that wasn’t neatly trimmed by the clippers is frayed from the last time I had chewed on them. The erosive power of anxiety.

"A memory leaps at me from the gnawed edge of the nail. A memory of a time, not long ago, when my immediate future seemed to be taking a turn for the worse…"

Great piece of advice! I started writing daily back in June with roughly 500 words a day as a goal. Now 4 month in, I reached the 76k word mark and 3 chapters to go. Feels sometimes stressed, but freeing on the other side.
