The 1375 map is basically when you spend most of the time doing that one cool bit of the drawing then the teacher says you have 1 minute left

1050 is actually an illustration of a fully functional landmark based rivermap.

People back then mostly traveled using rivers. Their maps didnt need to be geographically accurate, they just showed which river to take and at what river split brings you to the next town.

Think of it like a medieval metro map

Imagine looking at a flight map and then you just see an egg

Seriously though why is the 1375 Mediterranean the best one

It's crazy how limited in knowledge we were even 500 years ago. I can't imagine what we'll know in 500 more years

150 to 1050 perfectly depicts just how backward Europe got sent when Rome fell

Now I'm curious what maps of other cultures were like at same times

Now we need how different parts of the world's maps have developed.

Those medieval maps were more metaphor than geography.

They purposely put Jerusalem in the middle and arranged everything around that.

Think of them as symbols of divine order, not actual maps.

And just to point out, some of those islands on those maps could have been ghost islands used by cartographers as like a copyright against other cartographers, just like that one island in the gulf of mexico

Funny enough, none of these maps include Antarctica, since it was discovered in 1820. Making it all the more strange that Antarctica DOES appear on the Piri Reis map, created by the Ottomans in 1513.

The Imago Mundi map is from 700 to 500 BC and is remarkably accurate

I think it’s interesting that the map became much worse after the fall of Rome. I guess it goes in line with the dark ages.

That is super interesting! Satellites exist for around 5 decades, from that point of view the efforts required to map the world in the 15th century is unfathomable 🤔😉
Thanks for sharing ❤️👍

I’m still amazed on how maps where made back in the day. No fly overs or space photos just boating work place to place to draw everything out

Everyone should learn about Tupaia.
He guided Captain Cook on his first voyage, and even drew an accurate map of the South Pacific, even though he didn’t come from a culture that used pens and papers.

It feels like some maps after 1375 actually devolved in accuracy
