I've been using CCleaner...it has a built in registry cleaner. It's a well known program and I feel pretty safe with it. it offers to make a back up copy before running the fixes.

You can’t just backup and restore the registry like any other file — much of it can’t be modified by hand, and the files themselves can’t be replaced or copied over, at least not while Windows is running. And you can’t restore a full backup of the registry from an export file either.

True its easy to cause problems if you manually edit your registry. But I wouldn't trust some program by a 3rd party to do it either.

In the "Run" box just type in "regedit", no need to put in the extra ".exe" - it will still take you there.
