On SR 3023, Dimock, Pa., next to a leaking gas well that Cabot has been working on for over a year ! DEP came and took water samples and Fish and Boat Commission came and took water samples. No one took samples of dead fish to test them.....Results from the the two agencies have brought them to the conclusion that this is a result of freezing temps and the fish froze !.....but no other ponds in the area have this issue; this pond is 9' in the deepest part. Cabot is off the hook so far....I feel more testing is in order and testing of the fish is needed. I know someone who has frozen samples of the dead fish; all the fish died in this pond. Several species and hundreds of them....!

Unfortunately, it is common for fish kills to occur from oxygen depletion after a really cold winter and, of course, your local DEP is going to defer to that explanation. Those dead fish looked like some really fine crappies (fisherman that I am).  I'd be curious to know if fracking supporters in the area would eat the fish from that pond, being that it's so close to a frack pad...and a leaking one at that!

To be fair, what representatives of the agencies might be saying is not that the fish froze to death, but that they were starved of oxygen due to an unusually thick covering of snow and ice which blocked sun light to aquatic plants in the water below. When water temperatures below the ice started to rise in the spring, the warming of the water below the ice leads to vegetation decay and an increase in biological oxygen demand.  This is a common enough occurrence.  It has happened on our farm pond, even on one of the lakes Tully lakes in New York.  This could be a valid alternative hypothesis.  But what I observed in my pond were dead fish OUT OF THE WATER.  Once there is open water at the edge, the poor fish try to escape, only to die on the shore.  Knowing the actual date of the fish kill and status of the snow and ice could help rule this out.  Of course, the fish should be tested as well as the water, but for what marker?
