I just saw oldboy and so I wanted to learn more about him, and here we are. This are top 10 facts about choi min sik.
1) Born in January 22, 1962. When choi was a baby at 3 years old, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis.
2) Choi graduated from dongguk university with a degree in theatre. Interesting to note that, dongguk university is private and Buddhist based.
3) Choi was acted on stage, tv and the big screen in his early days. Such as kuro arirang, our twisted hero and so on.
4) However it wasn’t until 1999 where he acted in shiri, where he played a north Korean agent. Which was seen by 6.5million south Koreans, beating titanic which was seen by 4.3million respectively.
5) Interesting side note, shiri made a spin off drama called iris. I have seen this drama, man that one part, wow.
6) Choi received best actor award for his acting in shiri.
7) Several years after, choi acted in oldboy, this movie raised the bar for him, not only now being in his own country, but abroad as well.
8) When south korea and the united states reached the free trade agreement, reducing screen quotas from 176 to 73 days. Choi was very much against this. Even returning the prestigious okgwan order of cultural merit. Saying “To halve the screen quota is tantamount to a death sentence for Korean film. This medal, once a symbol of pride, is now nothing more than a sign of disgrace, and it is with a heavy heart that I must return it.”
9) He then went into a self submitted exile for 4 years.
10) He returned to the big screen, where he played a serial killer, even though the movie drew a lot of heat for its severe violence.
11) A year later he voice acted in leafie, a hen into the wild, which became korea’s highest grossing animated film.
