Erfurt is a city and the capital of the state of Thuringia, Germany, with a population of 202,590 (30.6. 2005), and an area of 269.17 km². The University of Erfurt was founded in 1392 and had Martin Luther as a student.
The Diocese of Erfurt was founded in 742. The city of Erfurt enjoyed autonomy in the Middle Ages, and in 1602 it became a vassal of the city of Mainz. Starting with 1802, except for the period 1806-1814, it belonged to Prussia.

The Diocese of Erfurt (in Latin Dioecesis Erfordiensis) is one of the twenty-seven bishoprics of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany, based in the city of Erfurt. The Diocese of Erfurt is in the metropolitan province of the Archdiocese of Paderborn.
Historic

The bishopric was founded in 742 by Saint Boniface, but in 755 it was abolished and its territory was incorporated into that of the Archbishopric of Mainz. The only bishop was a certain Adalar.

In 1994 the diocese was re-established as a suffragan of the Paderborn Archdiocese.
Archdiocese of Paderborn
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Paderborn (in Latin Archidioecesis Paderbornensis) is one of the seven metropolitan archbishoprics of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany, based in the city of Paderborn. It currently holds three suffragans: the Diocese of Erfurt, the Diocese of Fulda and the Diocese of Magdeburg.

The bishopric was founded in 799 by Pope Leo III. It was dissolved in 1802 and re-established in 1821 as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Cologne. In 1930, it was raised to the rank of archbishopric, receiving three suffragan bishoprics.
