Bette Davis did the best Mildred than all the other actresses' performances. She was willing to play this woman unvarnished. A superb performance since this day.

Read the novel first over 50 years
ago. It left little impression on me
back then.

After about 40 years ago, the story
came back to me as I became
aware that a chance meeting between two individuals can result
in a life long tragedy wrecking one
or both lives.

The tale makes a very serious
obsevation and has caused me
to appreciate the author's genius.

Great acting in the movie as well.

This is not a pretty story.

Bette Davis may have been a good actress ( some disagree, myself included ), but her British Accent is obscene its so bad. I've never heard or seen worse on a so called " big name " actress. It passed as acceptable - PRE WWII, as most moviegoing Americans had little to no experience with actual British Subjects. But after the War - Post WWII - it was laughable to most in the know. Growing up British - its painful to watch now, and one can only imagine the snickers in movie houses from coast to
