I cannot thank you two enough. You’ve changed the lives of everyone in our family. I was doing EVERYTHING wrong! You’ve made it possible for me to enjoy motherhood again and (I hesitate to even say it) to believe I can like my child. My ADHD seven year old is getting herself dressed and making her own breakfast in the morning! She brushes her teeth and gets her pajamas on without struggle! It’s a modern day miracle.

Thank you both for what you do. I have listened to 2 episodes so far and you are literally speaking my life. I am the mother of a just turned 15 year old boy who has ADHD. The difficulty in my parenting comes most from having ADHD myself. I have such a hard time being consistent and focusing on what is necessary and not just easier. ADHD parenting ADHD....
It's not an excuse and I know I can do it. Like I tell my children, we are blessed with a disorder that causes us to have to try harder and think more and think slower. I am also in recovery from addiction (self medicating as a teenager) from undiagnosed mental health and ADHD. I'm so behind myself in emotional regulation and maturity. Hard truth. I just want to thank you for telling me what I have known all along. It's uncomfortable for me to do the things you say but it's necessary. I appreciate you both. I just became your biggest fan.

Best one yet and I've listened to them all! I have gotten so much stronger as a parent. My 10 year old (not diagnosed) is finally starting ro get it. I think this advice should be given to all parents not just parents with children diagnosed with ADHD.

Ryan and Mike's program works! If only more schools would have you provide training. Thanks for making my parenting experience at home so much better.

I have to agree that outdoor activity is very helpful. Since soccer season has ended, winter weather, and decreased daylight our screens become much more popular. My 8yo adhd daughter definitely has to earn her screen time since this contributes to her argumentative and aggressive behavior. She also tends to focus on food when she is in the house which contributes to her weight gain, poor self esteem.

Thank you for all the great advice. I have adhd as well as my son, and it can be difficult at times. I wanted him to get involved in sports, and yesterday was his first wrestling practice. The first 5 minutes he pleaded to go home, but I stared straight ahead and didn't engage and by the end of the night he was telling me how much fun he had and can't wait to go back.

Love your podcast. My son is not clinically diagnosed with ADHD, but he is incredibly strong-willed and I have found your parenting advice to be much more applicable than anything else I've found. I have been trying to incorporate the concept of brain breaks, but he thinks being sent away from me is a punishment, refuses to go while starting to panic, and it turns into this loop that escalates into him having a meltdown (and increasing frustration for me because I, too, need a brain break at this point). Even if he is relatively calm at the start, the suggestion of going to take a break is a trigger for him to now start to climb this escalation. Any advice for these scenarios?

On the topic of face to face interactions and outside time - we homeschool, do low screen time and lots of outside time. There are 5-6 other kids in a similar age range as my kids on our safe, friendly street. We almost never see them, even in summer. Kids just don’t play outside in neighborhoods anymore. They’re either in their house on screens or being schlepped from extracurricular to extracurricular after school. There’s no free time. I don’t know how to provide this for my kids if 95% of families aren’t letting their kids out for free play anymore.
