I don't know if this was how the guy in the arcade I was playing unlocked Reptile more than 20 years ago but the double flawless on the pit is part of it. It was a really strange moment all of us that was not playing anything were watching it like it's a big moment in history. And it's still to this day one of the biggest moments in gaming history for me.

imagine being a 13 year old kid in the 90's and being good at this game, and you find Reptile on accident.

For those not understanding the moveset, the reason he was called reptile is because reptiles shapeshift. He can use all the ninjas moves.

the fact that reptile is the first secret character in fighting game history makes him a F'N legend

Ah, those memories. Long before cell phones & social media. Imagine what it must have been like seeing this mysterious character named Reptile randomly appear out of nowhere & then deciphering how to access him. What it must have been like to be out on a Friday night in 1992 at your local arcade, bowling alley, amusement park or whatever, surrounded by friends & getting to fight Reptile at the bottom of the Pit in MK1 after deciphering these mysterious clues. Truly a Generation X experience! So around here got to fulfill that? Share your stories. Perfection is the key👍

if you weren't around the arcades at the time this game came out, you just don't understand how big this is in vg history

What I do is this (Arcade perfect PlayStation 2 & PlayStation 3 ports)...

Do 3 VS (2 player) matches in a row (the 3rd should be at The Warrior Shrine).

At the end of the 3rd VS match, let the continue timer run out & then end up in 1 player mode (most likely at the 1st opponent) where the fight will be at The Pit.

If I don't see any shadows, I press Start on controller 2 to go back to 2 player mode where it's rinse & repeat (the 1st 2 player match will be at The Courtyard so again only 3 matches are necessary) until you see shadows fly across the moon at The Pit.

If you own the Sega Genesis and/or Sega CD versions of this game, enter the DULLARD code to activate the cheat menu & at least activate Flag #2 (flags are numbered 0-7, so it's technically the 3rd 1 down on the left hand side) so shadows will always fly across the moon at The Pit.

If you own the Super Nintendo version of this game, you simply just have to be at The Pit in 1 player mode (no need to wait for shadows).

But in all 3 of those home console versions, winning with a double flawless, no blocking & doing your character's fatality are still required.

This happened to me at age 9. A few days earlier, I had accidentally discovered fatalities by accidentally ripping Sonya's head off with Sub Zero. I was hooked. I played every day after school. And then, out of nowhere, the green Ninja challenged me. (I believe I was Raiden). Fun times.

As a kid with friends we actually sat down and performed this step by step only on a RUMOR that it would even work. Reptile then became my favorite character.

Man I remember there being so much mystique behind this guy. Did he come before Akuma as secret character? Looking back now, it's amazing how they used the announcer voice for emperor Shao Kahn.

I remember playing this at the circle k. Trying to learn the moves with no internet and just a game pro magazine

Damn son. 10 million points if you beat this guy? I don't play Mortal Kombat, but I would be so satisfied to get that many points at once!

I had this on SNES and had no idea who reptile was. Nobody had said anything about the fighter but I had played the damn game so much and one day I just got the match. Had no Idea how I did it and was completely in awe I nearly shit myself. Keep in mind this was before the internet was mainstream and I was just a 9 year old kid. NONE of my friends believed me and I could never repeat it.

I was around arcades all the time in the early 90s and I literally never saw this being done once. There were rumours about Reptile, but no one actually saw it. I bet 99% of MK machines never had a player unlock Reptile! Amazing to see

Mortal Kombat was the only game besides Super Mario World me and my brother had. He got incredibly good at the game. I still remember the moment of shocked silence we shared when the screen flashed. That was the best summer night ever

Funny how he beheaded Scorpion out of the Reptile

Everyone used to flock to the arcade on the weekends and stand around the MK machines. People would put a quarter up on the screen to signify that they were playing next. Most of us would just want though because the bigger kids were too good at it.
