Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel: It's a Chopper, Baby

Everyone knows a shovel can shovel, but Cold Steel markets their Special Forces Shovel (modeled after the one used by Russian Spetsnaz) as much more. They show it chopping, splitting and being thrown at targets - all successfully, so I wanted to test it for myself in a wilderness use role to see how it would perform basic axe/chopping tasks for fire making. More testing to come, but so far, I'm impressed.

One of the most hilarious things about the Special forces shovel video by cold steel is....they never show it dig.

i take this with me on search and rescue operations in my state. its very good at digging and getting ATVs unstuck, etc. as for why you want a chopping shovel, the chopping comes down to blade geometry. if its good at chopping, it'll be good at general digging by the way it separates the earth. also, think about hunting. sometimes you have to hack through big game bones before you can bring the animal out. you can hack with a knife that has a fine edge, or a shovel that has a working edge

I appreciate this review. This is exactly what I was wondering, how good this shovel is at chopping. Seems decent enough for camping or bushcrafty stuff. 😊 Listen to that blade sing when you hit it!

I use mine for digging fire pits chopping roots and wood they easy to sharpen they built very well and I feel safe when im solo camping with it around I wouldn't leave for camp without it

As far as getting the small tree down I'll stick to my leatherman saw. It can take down the same tree in about the same time with less effort. But for maybe making kendling or something I can see how this would be helpfully. Nice vid

I saw some show on the Military Channel about the Spetsnaz and they showed em using this... pretty badass.

Mostly when I backpack, I get off the trail and away from people. When I finally find a flat place to make a camp, it's usually gnarly and overgrown, roots etc.
This shovel may be the answer. Most backpackers would 'recoil as if from a hot flame' haha!, but not me. I can handle the pound and a half. I'm usually packin' 50 lbs or better anyway.

i love it, i used a lansky puck to make it as sharp as an axe, combine this with a knife, almost any knife and you have a lot wilderness survival capabilities, in a lot of different environments, and if you did have to use it for defensive purposes quite effective for that as well.

I dont know, Ive never really understood the point of a chopping shovel. I understand that many tools in one kinda thing, but doesnt it get dull alot? (being that its a shovel you dig with it. Not dissing your vid in any way. just curious as to how it handles the transition from being a dirt shovel to a tree/zombie slayer. but thumbs up to the video

Russians have used these shovels for ages and used them for hand to hand combat against the Germans in WW2. They still practise it today. :)
