🤯 Simple but brilliant. Didn't know this could be done.

So simple! Love little tidbits like this.

Must admit I would probably just stuff the diode in the scope if my phone wasn't around, but it's nice to see people doing things properly....cheers.

Convenient for viewing the waveform. I used to troubleshoot fiber withy phone in a pinch but i like this method. Clean.

It is working as a photocell. Very cool.

A parallel resistor to discharge the capacitance of the diode will greatly improve the response time. Try different values to find out what works best.

That's a nice idea. Much better than clipping on in oscilloscope probe with a resistor. I'm assuming you're using internal 50ohm termination?
On the other hand, diode is easy to find on assortment cabinet where the one tester I'd need rarely is sure to be misplaced somewhere not to be found :D

If the exact waveforms are not the thing you need to observe, but for example just to check if the remote or battery is totally dead, it is luckily very easy to use digital camera or mobilephone camera which shows if the led is flickering or not.

Great idea thanks. I wonder how practical it would be to create a similar device for testing car remotes - sensing a few hundred MHz? It would need a bit of active circuitry I guess?

i think i would have connected a cap by one lead just to have a cap in the video. Plus it would be a good talking point as to what it does in the circuit. :-)

I just use the camera in my phone to test a remote

You could just point in at your phone camera?
