Thx for the info. Never buy unknown ammo, it's dangerous. I reload, so I buy components, never entire cartridges.

That store is my local Cabela’s. One person stole that ammo and yes did get a slap of the wrist. The store knew that this person was doing it for months and did nothing to stop them.

Ammo can be sold legally at gun shows as well as a multitude of places .

Ammo is purchased all the time from private citizens for perfectly honorable reasons. For example: people moving, people selling their gun, people trading one caliber of gun for a different one, people needing $$ to pay for a new car or washer/dryer because their’s took a dump, someone who purchased in bulk years ago but now their circumstances have changed or they want to rotate old ammo, and on and on and on.

The ATF probably has the Lot numbers, so tracking it isn't as difficult as one might think, especially if you store it in the original box.
Now once out of the box, that's a whole nother story.
