A man has faced court accused of starting a California wildfire that has burned through more than 370,000 acres of land, destroyed scores of buildings and forced thousands from their homes.

Ronnie Stout, 42, appeared in court on Monday afternoon charged with arson, for allegedly igniting the Park Fire by pushing a burning car into a ravine.

The fire is now the 5th largest recorded in the state, burning in four counties about 100 miles north of Sacramento, has torn through an area slightly larger than the city of Los Angeles.

In the title it says "Man in court accused of starting historic California wildfire", where is the discussion about that? Very misleading title from the BBC.

This convicted felon turned arsonist should never interact with society ever again. I hope he is sentenced to the fullest extent of the law.

I used to live in that area and unfortunately it’s pretty normal to have fires there. But this one and also the fires in the past years (maybe you remember the one in the little city of Paradise which burnt down completely) are getting fiercer and bigger. This is one of the driest areas in California and there’s no natural boundary stopping the fire from spreading. Really sad. I am glad I don’t live there anymore. But I’m in constant fear for my dear friends there who had to be evacuated a few times - and probably not the last.

The BBC doing a splendid job of not reporting on the criminal or the publics' concern over justice.

Not only does this not speak to the topic shown, it doesn’t even mention the rare fire tornado (or firenado as some are calling it) caught on the footage shown here. Maybe the British see these all the time in their dry-land wildfires (lol), but they’re pretty big news here in California.

Cloud seeding has been around since 1946. Why don't they use cloud seeding on forest fires. Cheaper and faster also saves homes.

Take note, fires don't start themselves it's not down to global warming!!

if he is guilty he should be fined a LOT of money and face prison time so that he learns his lesson and does something like that again. no one should start fires on purpose without government, state or country permission to do so.

Most of these fires turn into super fires because of all of the fuel, such as dead trees left on the ground and brush being allowed grow out of control, there are millions of trees that have been killed by a bark beetle and they are left in the forest because of forest miss management when these tree die they eventually fall and become fuel for these fires the forest need to be cleaned to keep them healthy.
