This is really well done and I thought it would be fun to break it down.

I know that in their time, old consoles like this were advertised for the titles available to them, and played heavily into the social factor of the multiplayer feature. That's why you'd see so many mascot characters popping up and kids excited to meet up with each other to play.

This modernized take instead emphasizes the aesthetics and user experience of the device itself. We have close-up shots showcasing the texture, palm feel, and form factor. The touch screen is treated as the only functional feature even worth marketing, and the ad relies solely on visual language to convey how intuitive of an interface it is.


It really goes to show how much the tech market has shifted in 15 years. Smart phones are pretty much functionally interchangeable these days. Wireless communication and internet connectivity are treated as a given. They're not sold for their exclusive software but for how comfortable and nice they are to use. Every so often a phone comes up with a new user-experience gimmick like a stylus or a clamshell fold, and this singular feature is expected to carry the sales for the device.

I can only imagine what a retro ad for a modern phone would be like. A voice-over bragging about how it can run Flappy Bird, Facebook Messenger, send text to your friends, and the mere inclusion of a camera being treated as revolutionary dubbed over a group of smiling, over-acting pre-teens.

The only thing missing is a sequence where it flashes between different colors available and then having those colors spinning in a circle.

absolutely gorgeous! As someone who's childhood system was a ds lite, I can confidently say that you've seriously captured the emotion of this device and projected it at another level. Crazy stuff.

This does feel like a modern commercial, but more for an Apple product than a Nintendo product. If Nintendo was to make this system now, the commercial would probably have people playing the system more and not showcasing the actual hardware, something similar to the current Switch ads and not an iPhone commercial.

What took me off guard is the fact no actual punchline is in the video, as the title gave the idea there was gonna be an exaggeration of some sort, but no this actually looks legit! 👍

Fun fact: the DS Lite is the only DS model to have pressure sensitivity built into the touchscreen. (Edit: the DS Phat had it too, but I guess mine was faulty in that regard, and it seems the DS lite had improved sensitivity)
