Ontario Provincial Police have issued a warning to the driver of a transport truck they say is responsible for an overhead sign collapsing on a major highway Friday morning.

Officials say that just before 8 a.m. a truck collided with the sign on Highway 401 near Brock Street in Whitby, causing it to “buckle and collapse.”

I have been in the trucking industry for 38 yrs, we have seen a rise in this kind of stuff. I am not sure how a culture can take over an industry and keep having issues such as this. You see it all the time, trucks off in the bush, hung up on curbs in parking lots, driving with a dump box up, passing on curves, urine bottles on the road side. I knew an Enforcement Officer who had a truck pulled into his station. There were more people in the truck than seatbelts, and no one had an Canadian drivers license or a CDL. One guy had an international driver's license, he had never seen one before. He called his supervisor and was told to just turn them loose, leave them alone. How is this even possible?

Time to start heavily regulating Brampton truck drivers

Driver should never drive a truck again and pay for sign knocked down plus hefty fines. Somebody could have been hurt badly and death. So much delay and this should be a lesson to be more aware.

Hopefully that driver gets a hefty fine as that situation could have caused a tragedy

I have been hearing these reports about boxes being in the lifted position for years now, especially the last few for some reason . Maybe there are reasons i am unaware of, but why not have an alarm or large light on your dash that is triggered when the box is fully extended . Its an easy fix i would think but so obvious i feel i am missing something ..

I drove a scrap truck for a few years. NO WAY IN HELL did he get out of that Gerdeau Steel mill with the box up. Driver did this on purpose.

How can anyone be so blatantly stupid in not knowing that something isn’t right? The kind of idiots getting commercial drivers license is absolutely pathetic in this day and age that it’s scary. Far are the days when I got my commercial license where training was of upmost important as well as safety conscious. Now it’s here’s the keys and get to work. Far too many wannabe truckers who have no sense of responsibility and professionalism when on the road. MTO really need to scrutinize potential applicants for commercial licenses so that this crap doesn’t happen again and makes all the old school professionals look like idiots. Too many yo-yos

We need to know how all those truck drivers from Brampton are getting their license. This needs to be investigated. This is not the first time it's a driver from Brampton

I wonder if it was the same stupid driver who left the box up a little while back in Mississauga and had it jammed under an overpass closing the highway.

Hard to believe but last year while driving my peterbilt gravel truck, albeit was -30, but while driving down the road and the pto off, the box started lifting.
Being it was dark, it took me awhile to notice. And although it wasn’t lifted all the way up, it definitely freaked me out. The truck was of course an automatic but I was shocked that it had come up. No lights, switch was off.
Mechanic said it couldn’t happen but it did.
For the record, I’ve been driving since 86.
Now he obviously doesn’t look in the mirrors but I know that sometimes the pto will engage for some reason. I’m curious to see what kinda truck and transmission it was.
