The Untold Story of Jamaica’s First Peoples: Challenging Colonial Narratives

Throughout history, colonial powers have strategically used migration to mask the true identities of indigenous populations, reshaping the cultural landscapes of colonized nations. In Jamaica’s case, this manipulation began after the indigenous Taino population faced near extinction due to European conquests and diseases. To sustain their colonies and economy, the British imported enslaved people in massive numbers, which gradually redefined Jamaica’s demographic structure. Later, after the abolition of slavery, indentured laborers from India and China were brought in, further altering the island’s ethnic and cultural makeup.

Hello Alex 👋 your research is so thorough that I am curious to know if your presentations are ever used in teaching students in Jamaica? I hope they employ you at some point to help students regain an interest in the value of history and research.

Hello Elite, good to h your video, I always watch your videos, specifically when you explore slave plantations. Thank for bringing this topic regarding the Taino culture forward. We are still here, our ancestors integrated with the radical maroons during the British colonization lots of Taino and maroons were taken to Nova Scotia where they lived until this day. Taino were in Haiti Cuba, Guyana Suriname all the way from Yucatan up to State of Virginia the first civilization of the Americas are indigenous don’t forget the Kalinago people, the Sijioni people. These are a lot of subculture people. Keep up the excellent work, thanks for the acknowledgment. I’m also half Maroon .

During the middle age period in Europe, it was referred to as the Dark Ages. During that period, it was desolate, the people were barbaric. Ninety percent of Europe population were illiterate. The African Moors invaded Spain and conquered and ruled for 700 yrs. Equip with mathematics, architecture, geometry, etc. the African Moors brought civilization to Spain and other parts of Europe. The Moors that you are talking about did not come from Africa directly but from Spain. It was the Africans who taught Christopher Columbus how to navigate.

Thanks for this historical research. However, I would like to know when did the history of Jamaica changed from the teaching of the Arawak to the Taino?
And didn't the Taino's language was called Arawak?
