A chunky A5 rings planner, great for sitting pretty on your desk, wide open with all your juicy goals and plans clearly staring up at you, but not the most convenient thing to lug around, which brings up the age old dilemma of how to have your important dates and tasks to hand when you're out and about.

We'll cover:
- Some options for having your plans on-the-go
- Which option I decided was the best for me to try and why
- As well as my wins and woes after week road-testing my choice

I have the A5 on my desk at home. I use the pocket as you do, in my small bag. During the week I have a tote that generally remains in my car at all times with miscellaneous items that I may need while out (comb, lip balm, sunglasses, lotion, etc). I use the same small purse as you with the pocket planner. However, when I write a future event date in the pocket planner (I have an event planner business and a 9to5 job outside the home) I note it on my phone calendar immediately or when I do my planning for the next day it goes into my future months that are in my A5. I also highlight all important event or to do items in my pocket planner. I truly enjoy your videos. I appreciate the functionality of your method of planning. Blessings to you.

So funny how different everyone is, and how preferences and perceptions vary! I chose to go to an A5 rings from a letter size planner because I wanted something *small*! I wear a backpack when I go to and from work. My A5 rings and my Erin Condren A5 coil notebook (my journal), along with a "planny pack" with about a dozen pens all go in there with plenty more space for my work stuff. I don't carry a separate purse when I go to work. I have a large wallet on a wristlet, that also has my keycard, office keys, bus pass, etc easily available and I carry that all the time. When I don't have my backpack, I usually carry a smallish tote that holds my laptop if I need to take it somewhere. It also holds my A5 rings. But I don't usually take my planner with me when I just go to the mall or to buy groceries. My phones go in my pockets, even when I walk the dog.

I am an A5 bullet-journal boy and do not own a purse at all so here’s my solution. Note: I do use my digital calendar for appointments only. Then I cut an A5 sheet in half vertically and shoot 6 holes with the perforator. Then I cut those in half horizontally and make a stack of (now) A7 paper. Then I use a heavy paper or cardboard A6 folded in half to cover my stack of A7paper. I use a paperclip to hold everything together like a nice little booklet and this slips in my pocket. I use it for rapid logging and lightbulb moments that need to be written down. And later I can just clip them in my A5 journal at the date and place it belongs

YES! Someone else who sees the value in “divide & conquer.” 🤗 The solution that has worked the best for me, is very similar to yours. I have a personal moterm rings that is ONLY for things that are truly needed for on the go. I.e. calendar so I can make appointments, my weekly overview for business & personal scheduling, errands & focus points, budget/finance tracking and menu planning/grocery shopping. It’s also an extended Wallet, which helps me keep it in my bag ALL the time & not have the constant transfer dillena.
Literally everything else goes in my A5 - dailies, journal, memory keeping, reference section, health & fitness tracking etc etc…and it’s been working great for me! Normally I’m a one planner girl, but I decided I was just being foolishly stubborn. If I cram everything together it doesn’t fit well in one place anyway, it’s so fat I can’t close it. So splitting it up, made me capable of “divide and conquer.” I tried HARD not to…but could not handle lugging my A5 around… And yet also could not handle constantly working from a smaller planner, while home. So this is the only compromise for me 😆 it scratches the itch of having a consistent place to keep my thoughts and track everything, keeps me in my planner, even when I start to be inconsistent and fly by the seat of my pants, and yet keeps me focused and purposeful both on the go, and at home. 🤍🤍 thank you for sharing!!

Another option is to take pictures of the planning sections of your a5, and then group them together by month/week etc on a notes app. I use Google Keep, but I'm sure there are other apps that could work perfectly for this as well. When adding todos, I simply write them underneath the pictures. At the end of the day, I move all new todos over to my a5, without worrying that I might miss some todo as they were all written in specific places. It might not work for everyone, but it's something that one could consider if the other options don't work for them.

i definitely cant do two planners. i have tried. i have to have it all together. if i dont have my planner on me - which is rare - i put it on my phione - which i maintain anyways - and take a pic and add to my planner. my biggest fear is marking one thing in one place and not another and then all my hard work being organized is for naught lol. grat video

I had the same issue and my way of resolving it was to use both my phone and a pocket planner. I use the my phone to schedule my day in my calendar app and the pocket planner to write down the things that are not event or scheduled related, like notes or ideas. My pocket planner only had a Filofax year at a glance pull out that I can write down any important upcoming events and one off tasks and note sheets to write down ideas, brainstorm etc. and it also doubled as my wallet. I had also used daily sheets in my pocket planner where I planned out my day in it and the note sheets to gather ideas and notes. This allows me to do monthly and weekly planning, work and my goals in my A5 planner. I find rewriting your ideas from the pocket planner to your A5 allows you to rethink about your ideas and expands on them more, so being more in-depth.

Hah! This is a very timely video as I'm currently driving myself round the bend over what to do for best. I downsized to a Personal at the end of 2023 because I commute by bus and trying to lug the work laptop plus an A5 planner wasn't working. But I still gravitate towards A5 for notes and I really want my planner to be both a diary/schedule and a notebook. The 2-planner solution doesn't really work for me and I'm itching to go back to A5 but still trying to work out how to make it possible. Add to that the need for fountain pen-friendly paper (and I am so fussy about my paper!) and the fact that I'm convinced I should be retired from work by now and this shouldn't be a problem any more....

I really enjoyed your video and also very much appreciate your bringing up these issues as I just bought my very first A5 planner here at the very beginning of 2025, and have been working today on setting it up. I've forever used what I have always referred to as an "appointment book", but I love the idea of using a "planner" that helps me hold my life and my goals and my day-to-day history in a much larger way. (I am planning to include the little baby photos of day-to-day stuff that's an option!) And I quickly arrived at the question of "do I bring this big bulky thing with me when I'm out and about?!?!". I use a backpack as it's more ergonomic and I like to have everything I need with me, including a water bottle and often a small bottle of organic veggie juice. That took me to a fear of the planner getting wet if there was ever a leak left(!) So I've been shopping on Amazon for some kind of waterproof sleeve that I can put the planner in so that I don't have to worry about that. My other fear is that after putting much of my life in it, it could be lost or stolen if I took it out of the house, but I'm thinking that I won't ALWAYS take it with me, I'll be very careful when I do, and when I don't I'll take a photo of my to do list on my phone to bring with me.

I love that we are all figuring out how to use these tools and how to do adulting as best we can figure out! Thanks again for your lovely video.

I have the smaller, simpler planner that travels with me when I can't take my a5. I use sticky notes to track new things- new apps get put on a sticky note. Then, when I am back at my a5, I look at both planners and write in the new appt in both planners. It makes it easy to find the things that need to be integrated.

I have an A4 on my desk, but since it is loose leaf, I will often remove the day's sheet and fold it up in an A6 pocket notebook case and take that with me. On weekends, I'll usually just do a handwritten bullet journal in the a6 notebook in that same case and keep the A4 in my office. I also refer to Google calendar for incoming invitations, recurring appts, etc. Great video. I archive everything by scan or photo in OneNote and then recycle paper sheets/notebooks.

Great video. I am new to planning and have been wondering about these exact ideas. Thank you for helping me. I presently have an appointment planner.

I take my 'desk' Day-Timer (basically the same as A5 Filofax etc) with me when I know I'll need it. I connect a pretty (also durable) chain to the rings inside and wear it like a crossbody bag. Easy-peasy!

Hi ! I take a little planner for my "on the go" and yes, it works well for the dates only. I update it only when I know I wrote something on the small planner. I love your videos. Thx !

Getting my soapbox moment out of the way first -- in terms of privacy, especially here in the U.S., please assess your personal situation very carefully before adding your medical information tracking online.

My current fingers-crossed solution is an A5 with 15mm rings. Personal was too narrow for me, and it was too hard for me to find refills for B6 or HBxWA5 (Personal height, A5 width, had to source from Ashford in Japan or Mignon in Paris). Regular A5s with 25mm rings just barely squeaked into my favorite hobo bag; the small decrease in width of the 15mm made it a lot easier. I kicked and screamed for the entirety of fitting all my information into the format, but that's been very clarifying and beneficial.

Also, sticky notes make everything better!

That was my comment! I still use a tote bag. It holds my lunch and water bottle etc too

for work, the on-the-go is a B6 reference book. some meetings are "out there." i don't transfer to the A5 in the office, it says in the B6. for home, i keep a pocket size notebook in my bag at all times. rarely do i need to carry home data out. it depends on the external event. i have a small briefcase that becomes my bag with A5 binder so everything is where i need it. everything in my bag is in pouches so quick-transfer is easy; just the ones I need.

I do most of my planning during my commute, and my main calendar/diary is in my pocket Filofax, which comes everywhere with me. I have a larger notebook for note taking and more detailed planning, which I only carry if I think I’ll need it. I carry a backpack which is bigger than your handbag, but much smaller than your tote bag. I am setting up an A5 filofax to keep at home, to record things like my sewing projects and garden plans. I also intend to keep a back up of my appointments in there, which I will update once a week as part of my planning routine - just in case my little Filofax gets lost.
