You are on the right track. They are both Christian's and Tyler deals with depression. So in this song he is singing to God saying tell those demons to leave me alone because I am a nobody. Even tell them that you don't have plans for me. The beauty of the video and song imo is that he isn't insignificant like he says. I think it shows coming from nothing to something great.

They once played in a bedroom. Can you please react to addict with a pen studio version or trees and ride live at fox theatre

I think you are bang on about trying to deceive the demons into thinking God doesn't have plans for him. This song is powerful! They'd play this at the beginning of shows, and with that context my favorite line is "I'll stay awake, cause the dark's not taking prisoners tonight!"

A wealth of references that should be familiar: Sun's/Son's blood, three-time denial, a harpoon used for fishing, setting his soul on fire, creation testifying, staying awake. I don't see much about depression here, it's more focused on the plans and the battle.

About the musical style, remember how they say in Lane Boy that they like tempo changes and stuff? They actually do that a lot in their music.

this made me so happy. and i dig you putting putting a little of yourself and your philosophy into your response to the video. i think that's what music is supposed to prompt in us.

When you pointed out that they were happy playing to 12 people, it really hit home. Nice react...keep em coming (especially TøP). “Some see a pen, I see a harpoon”, think Moby Dick. Tyler is using his pen to fight his demons as Ahab used a harpoon to battle his. Hopefully the end result is better for Tyler .

Most astute and correct reactor I've seen on the meaning of this song (my favorite of twenty one pilots). Subbed.

Addict with a pen, the live studio version, you should do react to. You absolutely are getting it. Hugs

One key thing to remember, Tyler is a genius. And he talks in doubles and triples all the imte. That said, I guarantee, no matter what TOP fans tell you it means, no one but Tyler and Josh REALLY know what it's about. We can infer meaning. But that's personal. Not universal. In other words, the song means what it means. To you. Honestly bro I wouldn't ask if you are right or wrong from those of us listening. I get that you're being respectful but save that for the artist and not the fans. Maybe ask for some context, but not if you are wrong, or right. It's cool that you ask if you're on the right track, but never ask a TOP fan what these songs are about. All that matters is what you felt. You feel me? And, in my opinion, the reason the song changes cadence and tone is to convey the thoughts he has in the morning before his struggle with depression and anxiety really kick in. Versus what he feels at night when his insecurities come for him. Honestly I love TOP. But the fans are what turn many people off of Twenty One Pilots. Don't get me wrong, 99% of the clique are great people. But that other 1% is just over the top and full of themselves. They will tell you what you should feel and take from the song. Which is pretentious and just, for lack of a better word, arrogant. They are really public about most of this so all I will say is that most of their stuff is fighting inner demons, anxiety, and depression and the struggles most of us have with that kind of stuff. BUT what you take from it is what it means, and don't let anyone tell you what you should think or feel. Enjoy your journey with TOP. You're picking up a lot of stuff many people don't catch. Great job!

I think “ some see a pen I see a harpoon “ means tyler sees a pen as a powerful weapon. I mean a lot of his songs are about fighting his inner demons. And he wrote those songs with a pen. So in a way a pen is what helps him fights the demons.
The beat switch up is just something they like to do
As for the over all meaning of the song I couldn’t quite say but I know it’s about his struggles with his religion
Two YouTube channels that have done a deep analysis on the song are MFP reacts and the pop song professor

I think he says he’s insignificant. I think he’s asking the demons why they think he could threaten their plans when he considers himself insignificant

He's struggling with his demons, trying to exercise them through words. Synonymously, what I wrote a very long time ago in one of my poems is, "I hate reaching into the dark, because it's never failed me." Either way, that's a bad place to be in life. Step forward, because you cannot step up until you've stepped forward.

Now they are playing sold out stadiums. I am so proud of them, so proud. I saw them live recently and it is so hard to imagine that these guys played in front of a few people to this large amount. Really shows that you should go after your dreams and if you work hard enough, you'll get there
