I'm 38 now but haven't fished since I was 11, this was an outstanding video for bringing me up to speed as well as learning more. Thank you so much and please please keep posting. I watch two channels for fishing tips, yours and Tacticl Bassin but I genuinely like and learn more from your content then those guys. please keep posting and thank you so much sir.

Biggest mistake I made: not getting my fishing license. Not only because of the hefty fine I received 😅, but because of where the money goes. IDK what it’s like in other states, but where I’m at, all the money goes to preservation. I treat it like spending a couple bucks to say thank you to the lake

Major mistakes I've made in the Greater Los Angeles Area where I was born and raised:

Mistake #1 -- Was never taught how to properly hold a fish. I was scared off from fishing as a kid because of too many random jabs, pokes, and stabs. At 4:46 in your video you show how to hold a fish safely and properly. Fish-gripping tools also gave me some confidence until I learned how to safely handle different fish species.

Mistake #2 -- When I started fishing seriously four years ago at 32 years of age, I spent too much time at unstocked city lakes and ponds and blamed myself for the lack of fish. Can't catch fish where there are no fish! 😅 Eventually learned to read the DF&G stocking reports.

Mistake #3 -- Got the itch to fish and spent a lot of money on gear without realizing what I truly needed. Came out okay overall but definitely wasted at least $600 on equipment that's better off renting.

Mistake #4 -- Lived by the ocean my whole life but didn't go offshore fishing until my mid 30's. Wrestlin' some of these bigger fish would be much easier if I was a younger man! 😂

I've also got a tip for beginning fishermen.
It's a good idea to use line that is tested for a lesser weight than your rod. That way, if you catch a chunker and the only way this fight will end is with something breaking, you spare the rod and take it out on the cheaper line instead.

My grandfather used to take me fishing every weekend when i was a kid for years and years. Havent been fishing since I was a kid and wanted to get back into it in memory of him. Thanks for all these videos and I really do mean it. It has allowed me to pick fishing back up without my grandfathers help and know how. I dont know what happens after we die but I hope he's somewhere looking down proud that I'm carrying on our family traditions without him. All thanks to you and people like you boss

Another great video! I have definitely made all these mistakes myself. It never hurts at the end of a fishing day to take some time to reflect on what worked and didn't work that day. This will help with recognizing fish behavior patterns, seasonal locations, and picking the right tackle for the conditions.

SUPER helpful!! I used to fish with my pop but havent since i was a teenager. Now i have my own kids asking to fish so this is EXCELLENT for those of us dusting off our tackle boxes and getting back out there. Thank you!!!!

I always used a black rubber worm in the weedy areas . I still do 40 + years later .
I carry such a variety of tackle on my kayak that I hardly get skunked . But, even if you get skunked, atleast you got out there and had some fun.

Thank you so much for this channel. Just getting back into fishing after many years and these videos are straight to the point and just helpful. Some YouTube anglers really love to hear their own voices. You really get to the meat of it and don’t drag it unnecessarily. I’ve downloaded a bunch of your videos via the app for when I’m out on the water.

Hey Nat,
Would love for you to do a guide on setting the hook. I'm a beginner and am rather frustrated at how many hooks I've had that are poor quality (fish is barely on) and cases where the hook is unremovable. Thanks!
