I think you're missing the point, its not just whether people liked him or not, but the fact that they kept weighing expectations on him that he can't fulfill. They hated him winning, so he started putting people over, then they no longer wanted to see him lose. He announced retirement and people we sad to hear he's retiring, they wanted more Cena. Don't matter what choice he made the crowd's expectation and wants for him was just too high and it's finally taken him.

Edit: I think WWE are gonna drag the Rock explanation. But it's likely, everyone wanting him to be a 17 time champion, and the Rock was the only way to do that. He did what had to be done and yet again it's not enough.

Was waiting for his heel run since 2011 but his work at chamber and promo on raw exceeded all my expectations. Biggest heel turn in WWE history in my opinion

I feel so incredibly bad for Austin Theory mann. The dude’s in ring work is objectively much superior to Jey and it really pissed me off to see him buried for absolutely no reason. No hate against Jey but man does his match against Gunther lacks any excitement. There is nothing about this rivalry that makes it WrestleMania worthy. I really hope triple H has something to spice up this rivalry because the way it is right now, it is doomed to be disappointing.

The thing that you "didnt like" about this promo actually makes sense. Yeah people started appreciating Cena. And it was great when he announced himself for the Rumble. Everyone knew that this was his last rumble and his last shot at the WM Main Event. But when Jey eliminated him, everyone was yeeting and cheering. Then when he was in the Chamber match, there was a big portion of the IWC that wanted Punk to win. This was supposed to be Cena's retirement tour, he was to be celebrated. But the people couldnt even do that. So he was justified in saying that we ruined it.

EDIT: Also about The Rock. Cena reached the final 2 of the Rumble without The Rock's help. He won the Elimination Chamber without the Rock's help. He reached the WM Main Event without the Rock's help. A very strong argument can be made that Cena didnt really "desperately need" the Rock's help as he was doing just fine without it. Its more like he aligned himself with the Rock as a bigger middle finger to the crowd, saying that I'm only gonna think about myself now, so I'm aligning myself with a man famous for thinking only about himself.
