Yup, You guessed it right. Heeramandi was supposed to be a film, and he had been working on it for many years. I guess Netflix just swooped in at a much later stage. SLB has had a list of films and screenplays he's been wanting to make since the beginning of his career - just the technology and scope wasn't available to fulfill his vision or the actors he wanted never materialized. Bajirao Mastani was in development for 11 years, and he was always adamant that he will only make it with Aishwarya and Salman - which obviously never panned out because of their relationship history. But Sanjay finally did cave in and make it. Next is going to be Baiju Bawra and I'm beyond excited for that one!

Also interesting fact is that this song was composed by the great Amir Khusro for the Hindu festival of Basant panchami..
It was composed 700 years ago.
Mustard flowers are offered to Maa Sarswati ( godess of music art and knowledge) .. so he took mustard flowers to his Nizamuddin Auliya in the area of Delhi and he said I have brought mustard flowers for you my lord.

Even today on every Basant panchami Nizamuddin Auliya's final resting place we continue to offer Mustard flowers and sheets of Mustard colour.

The main woman - as you call her - is Manisha Koirala as Mallikajaan. She waits for Alamzeb (Sharmin Segal) alongside with Waheeda on the left (Sanjeeda Shaikh) and Bibbojaan (Aditi Rao Hydari) on the right side. The last one that enters the scene is Lajjo (Richa Chadha).
The one that's missing is Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha).

Each frame of this whole series is a work of art. Nothing is a neglected.. it's pure and real instruments, voices, sets.. a lot can be done with CGI but Sanjay just thinks of CGI as a post production utility.. it's not part of the shoot..
