tl;dr;
You can use also Virtual Machines in your job, if you know enough about linux and a bit of networking.

I have installed 4 VMs on my Ubutu working laptop. Instead of VirtualBox, I use qemu with KVM. One environment has a working TIA Portal installation. I use the other VMs are for CAE and Robot programmig software. Additionally one VM with just garbage and Java-Plugin installed, to program this very old vision system from Siemens. If you have enough cores and enough RAM, you can run 2 VM in background without much performance issues. To speed up the boot time, a ssd should be used. Sometimes I worked with 3 VMs at the same time (CAE, PLC programming, robot programming).

EDIT: 2x Windows 7, 2x Windows 10

9:04 - 9:14 That reaction I have every time when I see someone press the start menu of windows 10. That's really a lot of crap out of the box.

I am experimenting with Linux for some time already. I am a Windows sysAdmin. I always used VMWare Workstation on my home PC to virtualize my experiments. Since I like Mint, I installed Virtualbox and tried W10 installation. I was so frustrated. My Virtualbox W10 machine was freezing randomly. After some duckduckgoogling I have found, that I need to switch the acceleration from Default to KVM. Since that was done - all ok. Now the questions: Why Virtualbox was freezing with the default setting. And, why it did not select the proper acceleration, when I told it, that I'm gonna install W10 guest. You did not change the mode to KVM. Does the installation of W10 guest work ok for you? And if yes, why I had to switch to the KVM mode to make it usable?

This is pretty cool. But can Windows 10 run Wine? 😆

Tick the enable efi for special os. Windows 10 requires a uefi to run from what I noticed in virtualbox

Hey Chris should do a write up on setting up a PCI-E device passthrough based win10 VM, having GPU accelerated graphics will allow people to use Linux day to day without dual booting and still run the pesky things on windows they can't elsewhere with full GPU power (Of the GPU you assign) There is even tricks to allow Linux to swap between say a onboard when the VM is on and the dedicated GPU when it is off! Also easier to do in Arch/Manjaro AFAIK!

Thank you so much Chris, I had been at it for hours trying to fit the vm to my screen, guest additions did just that.

Installing windows 10 on manjaro is easy enough, the real tough part is to get a working virtualbox installation with vb extension pack installed, which is a pain in the ass since manjaro's default python version is 3 an vb uses python 2

it says Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Win10.
The virtual machine 'Win10' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine

it is also saying/ The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel module by executing

'modprobe vboxdrv'

as root.

where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.

Everywhere you can find informations that KVM is a best solution. But even with VirtIO drivers and all the configuration tips and tricks my KVM with Windows inside was slugish..
VirtualBox works flawlessly like a charm.

Dude thanks for making this video! I have been trying to figure out how to run windows on linux, so that I can do all of my regular windows stuff on linux, as my main system of choice, but not have to copy files from (over there to over here if ya know what I mean) boy this is cool!

I love your videos, Chris. This weekend I install Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.2 and experiencing my First 7 days Challenge. I have one Windows program I really need. So I installed Virtualbox 5.2.32 (from the software manager, dkms, ext-pack and guest-additions) and setup Windows Tiny 7 (5 minute installation). As there are several packages it is a pity you don't mention what to install. Everything seems to work well. However, I can't connect to a USB device (yellow exclamation mark) and don't have internet access within Virtualbox. So, I don't know how to update the USB drivers and install the Windows application. Did I miss anything in the installation? Any one having a suggestion?

Hello, such a nice video! That might be a stupid question, but what's the guest edition CD image that you say on the 9ish mine and is it important to have it? I was all settled till that point and then my laptop doesn't seem to have it, and it says I should download it from the web?

Hey Chris. I finally decide to switch to Linux. I installed Linux Mint 19.2. Apart from a minor power off problem everythings seems to work fine. I have one Windows program I need, therefore I tried to install Virtualbox. I get to the point of ‘Start’. I have Windows 7 on a usb stick, but do not see how to use that image to start up the windows guest. The selection says ‘Empty’. Did I miss something from your video?
