1 thing to note about his predictions is that he wasnt wrong necessarily about the fundamentals each time. He was basically right each time about markets being over valued and unstable but the classic buffet quote of "markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent" proved true as well.

Not to mention some pretty extreme federal monetary policy.

The "notional" value of the put position could be worth more than the premium. It depends on the delta of the puts. So it could be much higher than 1-2% of his portfolio value. In any case it is a hedge or bet against the market falling. Whether Burry is right is a different matter as you have mentioned.
