When I was a kid the harmonica was known as the mouth organ. A late friend and practitioner of the "blues harp", the most common term I've heard over the last few decades also called it the misery whistle. I always think of it that way now in remembrance of his sunny, funny nature and great blues, etc., shared.

The harmonica player is Mickey Raphael. He was with Willie Nelson for many, many years.

One of the great things about Prince is that he was such a musical genius that artists of every genre respected him. You saw that with all of the different tributes after his death. This is a great one.

It took me a few listens to catch it because I was so caught in Chris, but kudos to the crowd carrying the chorus!

Prince wrote this song but wasn't the first to record it... He wrote it for "The Family" who recorded it in 1985. The most famous recording is by Sinead O'Connor in 1990.

I know it's a fine distinction, but I believe this is a tribute, rather than a cover. It was performed a couple of days after Prince passed away and I've never seen another version and can't find any official recordings. 😕 (If anyone has a link to a recording I can download, send it my way!) He sings just a portion of Free Bird at some of his concerts, but you'll only ever see it in footage like this ... I have footage like this of it, lol ... but I wish he'd do an official cover. It was amazing and I was so disappointed when he didn't sing the whole song. There is nothing this man can't sing, IMO. ❤

I think Prince would have approved of this version.

You have heard a lot of versions of this song, but not The Family's, who Prince wrote it for. They were the first to record it and Sinead O'Connor is the most popular and known as the definitive version. The Family's version is worth a listen.

A great song shines regardless of the artist. But between Sinead O'Connor, Chris Cornell and now Chris Stapleton, you have 3 unbelievable covers. Still lean towards Sinead but you can't go wrong here.

A great song is a great song, but part of me wonders if he would have done this cover of Chris Cornell hadn't done ...I guess I will wait for him to do Purple Rain.
