The actual answer is because he most likely just came back to life. Yeah, Vergil genuinely died in DMC 1, his soul was literally destroyed in front of Dante. The thing is; Devils can come back to life even if their soul is destroyed. In DMC, the soul is a ninth-dimensional construct that works on the will of the devil. If a Devil has a really strong will power, they will come back and their soul will be reconstructed.

So Vergil died, his soul was destroyed and he just came back to life with his own will power, which remains unbroken even after all the torture. But that state in which he died is also the state in which he came back.

The Craziest part is that we were so close to lose Vergil and he will die either as weak Vergil if he wasn't able to take Nero's arm and get Yamato back or as V who was about to crumble into dust from or Dante who could have killed Urizen for good even V and Nero didn't show up

Don't forget, Vergil fought Mundus DIRECTLY after the final confrontation with Dante in DMC3. He had been through 3 fights with Dante, one of which had JUST finished.

We need a dedicated Vergil game to explain what he was doing after dmc 1, before, during, and after both dmc2 and dmc4 cause he had to have been alive for quite sometime to suddenly appear in dmc5

He got trapped in the demon world, turned into angelo, then got sent back to the demon world and eventually made his escape. The demon world is almost impossible to live in, so he had to fight his way through there to survive, thus why he's more warned out once he comes back
